We make the same subs every game and neither Oakley before he left or boyd have impact. Samuels may offer more once fully fit but he's been out months. Plenty chances to try a player that offers something else with a physical presence around the cloggers in this league.

I’m all for giving youth players a chance in the first team but there are plenty of obvious reasons why Cairns has barely played for us this season.

Is there? In his limited appearances he's looked strong and knows where the goal is. And last week with Billy out and Samuals not ready to start. He should have been our only option to start upfront.

Same with Nicolson. Before his injury looked like scoring or creating something every time he had the ball. Yet if he was available, I'd bet Shaw would still be starting ahead of him.

We play one up front and our main striker is the third top scorer in the league. When he’s available he plays. Was there an argument for giving him a start at Dundee? Yes but I can also see why we didn’t start a pretty much untested 18 year old up front away to second in the league when we are on a horrendous run of form.

Again, I’m all for giving him minutes off the bench but it should ideally when we are winning by a few goals where there isn’t pressure immediately piled on him to score.

When he has come off the bench he has looked alright and obviously got a goal against Morton but that doesn’t mean he’s ready to be getting starts/longer periods on the pitch.

On that basis we will never blood youngsters whether cairns or anyone else. This league is so tight there arent many examples of games like this.

Robertson at the Ross County today for the BBC.

It's now more than a fuckin joke with this chancer.

With our recent accounts surely the club should let him go now, he can only have a few months of his contract left, it's more than obvious there is no value in keeping him on, what other club would accept this.

Cairns was recalled to cover injuries. Ideally he’s loaned again to get regular playing time, allowing him to develop some of his decent attributes further. He’s one for the future.

He's out of contract this summer. Signs of long term planning there.

Our club is pretty poor both now and historically with bringing through youngsters, unless they had a name like Christie or Polworth. Big reason some think its time for a full culture and philosophy change in the club at all levels.

What?

We have Harper, MacKay, Hyde, MacGregor all currently in the team. 3 of which would be considered starters.
3 out of 11 is a great percentage of youth academy players.

Polworth and especially Christie were fantastic players for us and were in our team based on their ability and nothing else. Quite wild to be suggesting it is down to their names which the managers at the time wouldn’t have cared less about.

Charlie must have had some contacts at Bournemouth to make sure his son got some minutes at the Emirates today as well. Nothing to do with how good Ryan actually is at football.

I was told he wasn’t particularly impressive at Forres so maybe we don’t think he’s good enough long term for us?

Fair enough if you think our youth systems poor that’s your opinion. Plenty players have progressed through it to the first team, a smaller number have been sold on for decent money too. It’s night and day compared to Ross County for example.

Graeme Shinnie and Nick Ross dad’s must’ve had a personal line to Terry Butcher

Surely if we were that bad at bringing these lads through. They would go elsewhere kick on and end up at a higher/similar level. Being honest I can’t really think of anyone that fits that mould and most of the youth players we bring through end up in the Highland league etc or league 2 at best.

I think for the size of club we are and the geographical element, we do pretty well.

Ryan Christie was Young Player of the Year and went on to play for Scotland, in the a champions League and is now playing in the Premiership. I doubt there are many clubs our size who have a youth product that good.

How many have we produced though? How many good young players have come through and been in the picture for the first team? Let’s look at it. Here’s how many youth products have had more than ten starts in each season for the last 20. I’m counting players who played for our youth teams before coming into the first team - so Ross Tokely doesn’t count even though he played with us from 16, for example. Also not including re-signings so Daniel Mackay doesn’t count this season.

2002/03 - 1 (Grant Munro).

2003/04 - 0

2004/05 - 1 (Grant Munro)

2005/06 - 1 (Grant Munro)

2006/07 - 2 (Michael Fraser, Grant Munro)

2007/08 - 2 (Michael Fraser, Grant Munro)

2008/09 - 3 (Michael Fraser, Grant Munro, Garry Wood)

2009/10 - 1 (Grant Munro)

2010/11 - 4 (Grant Munro, Nick Ross, Graeme Shinnie, Shane Sutherland)

2011/12 - 3 (Nick Ross, Graeme Shinnie, Shane Sutherland)

2012/13 - 1 (Graeme Shinnie)

2013/14 - 2 (Nick Ross, Graeme Shinnie)

2014/15 - 3 (Ryan Christie, Nick Ross, Graeme Shinnie)

2015/16 - 2 (Ryan Christie, Liam Polworth)

2016/17 - 1 (Liam Polworth )

2017/18 - 2 (Liam Polworth)

2018/19 - 1 (Liam Polworth)

2019/20 - 1 (Roddy MacGregor)

2020/21 - 3 (Cameron Harper, Roddy MacGregor, Daniel Mackay)

2021/22 - 1 (Roddy MacGregor)

2022/23 - 2 (Cameron Harper, Lewis Hyde)

Should Sutherland not also be included for the last few seasons?

That's not the be all and end all of the system. If youth development was as simple as a sausage machine, it would be cheaper and easier.

There's a socialism about the system and there have been many that have prospered at a level that is appropriate for them.

5 in 5 for him now.

Amazed you let him go to a playoff rival.

It was clear there was a falling out with Dodds and he wasn't going to get a look in again.
