Audaces Fortuna Juvat
A colleague and I are planning to use our over 50's railcards tomorrow for a game in Fort William. We have tried ringing and e-mailing the club to check the likelihood of the game being on, but with no luck so far. Can anyone help us?

FairWeatherFan
I know from their track record they struggle and this is probably just another bad year. Is there any chance they might try to go into abeyance?
HibeeJibee
Perhaps fortuitously - between now and LC R1 in mid-Feb they've 5 homes (but 7 of last 8 were off), 1 blank week, plus 3 aways v Strathspey (17th), Fraserburgh (3rd) and Deveronvale (10th). Fraserburgh aside - maybe buys some "breathing space"?

They're seriously toiling, tbh. After joining the HFL in 1985/86, Fort William has struggled, finishing bottom of the table in 15 of their 31 years as members. The club's highest HFL position was 11th. The current situation seems more serious (only 13 players ?), so will the only West Highlands club in senior non-league football survive, fold, go into abeyance, or resign from the HFL and return to the North Caledonian League. Their loss would be very sad indeed. If Fort "go into abeyance" (as suggested above), a return to the HFL in the foreseeable future may be unlikely as the SFA wants to reduce the number of Highland League clubs to 16 (currently 18) in line with the Lowland League, and even if the HFL successfully rejects this membership reduction, Banks O'Dee will almost certainly apply to fill the vacancy. GordonS
It's remarkable that, other than Fort William, there are no senior or junior football clubs west of Inverness and north of Alexandria. Who's the next best team in that area - Oban Saints?

FairWeatherFan
Helensburgh? EDIT: They couldn't support a league side, but maybe an Isle of Skye team to compete in the Cups organised by the North Caledonian League. You've already got Lewis & Harris that can manage that so it's not outside the realms of possibility.
GordonS
2 hours ago, Sergeant Wilson said: Where else could support one? There's over 16,000 on Lewis, half of them in and around Stornoway. Oban has what, about 10,000, with a few thousand more in the neighbouring villages like Taynuilt, Connel, Barcaldine etc. There's over 20,000 in Skye and Lochalsh too. To put that into context, Auchinleck has a population of fewer than 4,000, and Dingwall and it's surrounding area has about 13,000 (though more in towns up the coast). It's an area that supports a good number of well organised shinty clubs too. In a football mad country like Scotland, it's a remarkable thing that the one senior or junior football club in the entire region, the only place for many, many miles for guys to play, is possibly the worst in the country. It's a big area though and as you point out there is big competitor in shinty. It might just be an anomaly in population distribution that the people most interested in football settled elsewhere. The fact is Fort are all there is and it's not likely to change.

invergowrie arab
Serious answer is Argyll, Lochaber, Skye & Lochalsh are all shinty country. Even Fort William and Oban are far more shinty than football orientated. Lewis & Harris is different. There is a very popular and well organised league on Lewis & Harris but games are often played midweek evenings in the lighter months with an indoor league over winter . I don't think there is any appetite at all to join a league to play Keith or Fraserburgh. Skye and Lochalsh also have a good league and with access to the mainland it would be more viable but again I doubt there is interest.
