U2 at the BBC

Brilliant hour of TV/music earlier.

Bono and the band in general get a fair bit of stick for being up their own arse a bit and quite 'preachie' but unquestionably one of the most influential, groundbreaking bands of the last 40 years, incredible song writers and live performers.

Anyone else catch this tonight?

To me they are like a more original cold play.

f**k those guys.

f**k them in the ear

and f**k apple for the auto downloads... those newer songs are just aimed at sockless beards out there.

f**k those guys.

Could've done without the cozy chat with Cat, but the music was good. I've got Stuck In A Moment as an earworm this morning, great pop song that.

The band now look like freeze dried versions of U2 from 25 years ago...

Stuck In A Moment was my highlight of the night, I forgot how good it is.

I thought achtung baby was fairly groundbreaking stuff when I listened to my brothers copy when it came out. I generally couldn't stand them but loved that album. They kinda disappeared up their own arse a bit after that. Then Saint Bono bought a shopping mall.

I like U2, but I found their new album a bit dull.  'Songs of Innocence' had three or four good tracks but was nowt special overall but I think this is one is even weaker.  I like 'You're The Best Thing About Me' and 'It's The Little Things That Give You Away' but you'd hardly be gutted if you went to see them live and they didn't play them.  They strike me as a band who've run out of things to say and nowadays just seem to be going through the motions.  'War', 'The Unforgettable Fire', 'The Joshua Tree' and 'Achtung Baby' (even 'Zooropa' to some degree) are all great albums with a totally different sound released within the period of a decade.  The last three or four U2 albums have all been much of a muchness with nothing particularly distinct about them.

U2 are a great band with some great tracks and same great albums, but their output over the last decade has sounded like a band that's run out of steam.

Unforgettable Fire was definetely their peak for me....incredible album.

And a very underrated album.  'Pop' gets a fair bashing and often cited as the band's weakest album (apart from 'October') but it's not a bad listen - in fact it could be argued it's aged quite well and is far far better than their latest records.  That album as well, instead of their usual production duo of Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, they had it produced by Howie B.  Now it might not have been to everyone's taste but at least they tried to take their music in a new direction.  They haven't done that for years.

I completely agree with the recent comments surrounding their post Zooropa/Pop output, with the exception of "Stuck In A Moment", which I think is one of pop music's truly great songs. For the genre it's absolutely perfect.
