From the Ebenezer Scrooge department...the SFA puts East Fife back in their box for swankery:

In retrospect I demand that their 13-2 win against Edinburgh City be struck from the record!

Surprised this didn't merit a mention during Match of the Day, but 60yrs ago - Boxing Day of Thursday 26th December 1963 - probably the most remarkable set of scorelines for any single day in English football history happened. Certainly the most incredible top division card in peacetime. In those days festive double-headers were arranged home-&-away on Boxing Day and the Saturday after.

(Arsenal 4-1 Birmingham City had been brought forward to Tuesday 5th November, in case their Fairs Cup tie v Liege had gone to a playoff earlier in the week).

No games in Scotland as it wasn't a major holiday!

The second incident (in the space of a fortnight, following the Bobby Thomson red card against Rangers) which saw our strong start to the 79-80 season being undone.

Drawing 1-1 at Parkhead, in a top-of-the-table clash, Celtic scored a 2nd goal which, as was later agreed by everyone, should not have stood.

After lengthy protests from our team (which saw a couple of bookings) the game continued. We later awarded a throw-in - Jim Holmes went to take it and told the linesman "it's about fucking time you gave us something", and was sent off.

Celtic won 3-1. I've seen footage of Doyle's cigar-tapping goal celebration - fair sticks in the throat given how un-easy the game had been for Celtic until the officials intervened. Thankfully, neither them nor the other cheek won the league that season.

Always found it ironic that Dom Sullivan later played for us.

A rugby XI playing football?  No- a Rugby XI.  From the era in which reserve sides were often given the name of the senior club ground, the Queen's Park Hampden XI being probably the most famous in period, and the explanation for why the Medda have such a curiously retro monicker.  This is from the Scottish Junior Portfolio of 1897, an invaluable archive of a few dozen Junior clubs from the period.

Was it a thing back then to leave the 'c ' from names like Mc...?

Didn't Ipswich turn over Fulham at Portman Road a couple of days later ?

Christmas Eve 1977 I was at Gayfield for the Arbroath 0 Hearts 7 game. First half was all Arbroath but Willie Gibson (not "Park" as per the paper) scored a "Van Basten" volley from the edge of the box near the bye line. He meant it as there was no support in the box!  Second half was a procession though and those days a hat-trick meant a case of whisky being awarded to the player.  Gibson took a penalty for his third (Eamonn Bannon was the regular taker) and Busby also got his crate of whisky. Buzz-bombs was funny as he'd been clattered by the keeper earier so chased in a cross with intent of revenge. The keeper saw him coming and curled up in a ball and let the cross bounce away. Busby realised "crate of whisky" would trump revenge so scored. Bannon got a crate the next game three days later so I'm surpised the team managed to keep their eye on promotion after that 😀.

Gayfield was good to Hearts that season as the 1-0 win in the last game confirmed promotion along with Morton. Pre-social media Dundee fans invaded Cappielow after a 3-2 win there when a rumour was started that Arbroath had equalised so Dundee would have been up instead of Hearts. Pictures of Dundee fans celebrating were in all the Sunday papers. I used to carry a small radio so I could get Sportsound (yes, been suffering Chick Young a looong time!) You could just not trust ANYONE to tell you the correct score.......

Were Morecambe playing in the World Club championship finals as I don’t see them listed?

That's correct having crashed 10-1 they promptly won the return 48hrs later 4-2... we also find West Ham having crashed 8-2 at home to Blackburn bouncing back by winning 3-1, and Burnley having won 6-1 against Manchester United on the Thursday then lost 5-1 on the Saturday, while Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Bolton was followed by Bolton 3-0 Sheffield Wednesday . Mad couple of days.

Stoke v Liverpool was postponed and not played until late April when appropriately the Potters redeemed their 6-1 defeat at Christmas by winning 3-1.

Mighty Morecambe were sadly only good enough to be ambling their way to mid-table in Lancashire Combination in those days.
