Dundee Hibernian
7 hours ago, Eednud said: On 7 June 1967 the Vancouver Royal Canadians (Sunderland in disguise) beat Dallas Tornado (aka Dundee United) 4-1 at the Empire Stadium, Vancouver. Scots Neil Martin and George Mulhall (2) scored three of Sunderland’s goals. Sunderland had a strong Scottish connection with Ian McColl their manager. He was Scotland’s manager from 1960-65 played for original Rangers (from 1945-60). Scottish players were George Kinnell (ex Aberdeen, Stoke, Oldham, Middlesbrough), Jim Baxter (Scottish cap, ex Raith Rovers, Rangers, Notts Forest), George Herd (Scottish cap, ex Inverness Thistle, Queen’s Park, Clyde, Hartlepool Utd), George Mulhall (Scottish cap, ex Aberdeen, Morton), John O’Hare (Scottish cap, ex Derby, Leeds Utd, Notts Forest), Neil Martin (Scottish cap, ex Alloa, Queen of the South, Hibs, Coventry, Notts Forest, Brighton, Crystal Palace), Billy Hughes (Scottish cap, ex Derby, Leicester, Carlisle Utd). Following from a report on the Roker Report site with a link to the full report below. With discipline lax under manager Ian McColl, Jim Baxter by his own admission led a clique of “bored” hard-drinking/hard partying footballers whose exploits included - trashing hotel rooms at their base in Vancouver, the Georgian Towers hotel. Throwing a tv through a bedroom window. Having to be rescued from their bed as they had awoken to find themselves surrounded by broken glass and no shoes within reach. A drink the gantry party game that went awry and resulted in one of the players being admitted to hospital with alcohol poisoning. The arrest of Baxter and John Parke in Washington after a fight in a bar in a black neighbourhood of the city. A riotous swimming pool party that went on into the early hours of the morning of a game. https://rokerreport.sbnation.com/2023/6/7/23750623/otd-7-june-1967-vancouver-royal-canadians-sunderland-4-1-dallas-tornado-dundee-utd That old Dundee/Dundee United confusion on the programme cover.

HibeeJibee
Some newspapers have been running reproductions of their coverage from the week of D-Day... and I was struck by the impressively high scoring encounters fans were getting in the Last 16 of the substitute Scottish Cup competition (being played over 2 legs under war emergency conditions). They were served-up an average of no less than 4.6 goals per game, with ties ending 10-2, 9-2, 6-0, 8-3, 7-2, 6-3, 5-4 (aet) and 4-3 ... Clyde, Falkirk, Motherwell and Morton went on to win in QFs; ultimately 'Well beat Clyde by 1-0 at Hampden in the Final a month later before 70,000 on the day British & Canadians forces launched their assault into Caen. Incidentally this was 2nd of only 5 occasions in history that neither Rangers or Celtic has appeared in QFs of the Scottish Cup/equivalent tournament (in this case the Summer Cup); others being 1923-24, 1946-47, 1986-87 and 2005-06. Observe how Entertainment Tax hikes had sent admission rocketing from 1s men & 6d boys/servicemen in 1939, and KO at Tannadice was 3:45pm: Edited June 8 by HibeeJibee

Ivo den Bieman
Vasil Ringov of Vardar Skopje and Paul Hegarty exchange pennants before the second leg of the UEFA Cup second round tie in late 1985. This is the current National Stadium, back then only one modern stand had been built. United had already won 2-0 at Tannadice. Hegarty scored on the quarter hour mark, cancelled out by local hero Darko Pančev, who was to win the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade in 1991. The game finished 1:1 and United progressed- a very good result against a difficult opponent. The Yugoslav First League was a strong competition in the 70s and 80s.
