One of the driving forces of capitalism is greed and why not? As long as it is contained within rules and regulations capitalism and greed are forces for good. What would life be like without Silicon Valley? What do you think drives Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk? I have to deal with Amazon through my work and all I can say is those guys are the worst bunch of exploiters ever. A dreadful company that treats their workers like trash while Bezos sits with $180 billion in the bank.
Suspect Device
You can have capitalism without the greed. In an ideal world (where we're free to choose ) There aren't many examples of this but I do believe it would be possible.

All I’m saying Sandy, is that in this country, UK or Scotland, we are far too quick to denigrate entrepreneurs who turn out to be billionaires. Without those capitalists, we would be in a much poorer state both in terms of technology advances and prosperity. Im afraid socialism doesn’t quite ‘cut the mustard’. -

Jeff Venom
For me this more about that weasel of a PM with one face championing private greed from a global public health crisis, and with another having the brass neck to clap healthcare workers but deny them pay increases. It's deplorable disaster capitalism.

It's deplorable disaster capitalism. I must inform you that a big chunk of the NHS is privatised. The GP’s are self-employed, the drugs come from private companies (who do you think produced the vaccines?), all the equipment comes from private firms, the buildings are built by private companies. Almost the only public part is the hospital staff. Indeed, large swathes of the support staff are employed by private companies. -

In an ideal world (where we're free to choose ) There aren't many examples of this but I do believe it would be possible. I believe it would be possible for me to personally score the winning goal in a World Cup Final but there aren't many examples of this. The only time capitalism vaguely lived up to this promise was when there was a social democratic consensus borne out of the blood of millions of the dead and maimed who brought back revolutionary anger with them coupled with a superpower with at least a superficially alternative ideological take on organising society. I think it's telling that since that revolutionary anger has dissipated and the Soviet Union dissolved that consensus has evaporated and greed at the expense of a social good has become the norm. The main difference between capitalism and socialism is that capitalism in practice has been able to define itself without opposition and it's turned out to be literally destructive to the planet and decimates the mental health of the population and erodes much more whereas socialism in practice has been perpetually under siege and is still somehow regarded as the one that's beyond the pale. Are you claiming socialism hasn't been literally destructive to the planet? The obvious Chernobyl aside, socialist counties strip mine, pollute massively, and run hugely inefficient industries which contribute to the destruction of the environment.

There's a difference between countries which purport to be socialist but aren't attempting to compete in a capitalist world system and a capitalist world system which prioritises growth above even above the conservation of the planet. Bear in mind Cuba is apparently the most ecologically sustainable developed country on earth. Edited March 24, 2021 by NotThePars
