Going to Russia anyway...

If Scotland had qualified me and the missus would have gone to the World Cup, as we go to most Scotland away matches anyway.

However, when we didn't qualify, after drawing in Slovenia, the missus said she still fancied going to Russia anyway.

She then booked us on a cruise down the Volga from St Petersburg to Moscow. Leave on 12 June, and back on 24 June, so plenty of chances to watch a few games on the Russian equivalent of BBC Scotland Sportscene. (I assume they will have satellite TV on this boat?)

I have been to St Petersburg before i didn’t like it. I always felt it was a place you constantly have to have your wits about you.

I remember seeing two Russian guys start what looks like a fake fight outside McDonald’s, clearly the idea was to involve an unsuspecting tourist in some kind of scam

Maybe they were re-enacting Fight Club?

St Petersburg was class, heading to Moscow tomorrow and then Volgograd on Sunday for 5 days.

Very friendly so far, well organised and just one big party.

You would have thought Russia had won the final last night going by the scenes in the streets at 2am local time when we headed home.

Interested how this went - not least because the Volga doesn't go anywhere near either St Petersburg or Moscow! I take it you mean along the canal to the Moscow River? Sounds like a brilliant trip and a great way to see those two magnificent cities.

We go to Sochi at the end of the month.  Will be in St Pete's and Moscow in July.

£1.50 a pint in fan zone. Do you pay to get in this area?

Any tips would be excellent.

Fan Fest is free. We arrived in Moscow today and it's more like £2.50 a pint with a free souviner glass each time. They are different in each venue.

They are sign posted in blue in each city, run from.mid day until after the last game , have live music, low cost food and stuff to do as well as official shops. Moscow fan zone is massive compared to St Petersburg. I think there were 8 or 9 large screens tonight and only 3 in St Petersburg.

You will love it. I've never laughed so much in ages. Tonight random international game of keepie up . No one spoke each other's languages we just played

If Russia are playing the fan zone are very busy. At other times lots of space.

Got back earlier in the week and that was the most memorable holiday ever and I cannot wait to go back to Russia

The people are so friendly, we ended up travelling a lot and ended up doing St Petersburg to Moscow, then on to Volgograd back to Moscow, followed by a trip to Kazan which is stunning and then on to Yekaterinburg , all done by train where we met locals who fed us, would not take any money and just wanted to speak to people from the UK.

They  said not to speak to the locals and there would be anti British sentiment , well that was total crap. They know the UK government does not like them but have no issue at all with UK citizens. There is so much of Russia that could make a big difference here. The streets are spotless, everything works, even in rural areas. yes the trains were very slow (It took 21 hours each way to get from Moscow to Volgograd) but the difference between Russia and Moldova where I had to spend a day on the way home was night and day, it looked like Russia but everything is run down (The bus from the airport broke down 3 times in a 30 minute trip)

Highlights of the trip included a couple of random nights out where Russians just asked us to the pub or go drinking with them, doing an interview live on al Jazeera where we talked about Mo Salah and the interviewer asked about David Narey and would Scotland be at 2022, the train trips and the total randomness of Russia. Some things you just had to be there to believe it happened .
