The draw for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup was held in Dubai overnight. Australia are defending champions with UAE the host nation. Games will be played in Abu Dhabi (3 venues), Dubai (2), Al Ain (2) and Sharjah (1). Tournament runs from 5 January to 1 February 2019.

Group A: UAE, Thailand, India, Bahrain

Group B: Australia, Syria, Palestine, Jordan

Group C: South Korea, PR China, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines

Group D: Iran, Iraq, Vietnam, Yemen

Group E: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, North Korea

Group F: Japan, Uzbekistan, Oman, Turkmenistan

Top 2 in each group qualify plus 4 best 3rd placed sides.

Another bloated tournament.

Some nice games between rivals/neighbouring countries. Iran v Iraq, SA v Qater, Syria/Jordan/Palestine in the same group. These could be interesting affairs. Other than that though, I can see the group stage becoming quite drawn out and some fairly easy wins for the bigger nations.

Nuts.

I agree. I always enjoy watching the random countries in Asia playing each other but after watching Australia against Syria and Thailand, there is a big gulf in quality. Australia could easily have hit double figures against the Thais for example.

I'm worried that in Australia's group, the 3 other teams will park the bus and time waste all match making the games terrible to watch.

The knock outs are always great to watch in the Asian Cup though.

Anyone remember the Iran v Iraq game in the last tournament? That was some game!

46, Timor-Leste had defeated Mongolia 4-1 (h) and 1-0 (a) in the 1st Round and had played 3 games in 2nd round Group A for a combined 0-25 scoreline before they were done for fielding ineligible players. All games were forfeited as 0-3 losses, including the 1st Round game but it was deemed to late to allow Mongolia to replace them. The results of the 3 Group A games played were alloed to stand.

Yes 2-1 and Thailand equalised 8 minutes from time with Aussie winner 4 minutes later. In the earlier game in Bangkok it was 2-2 and Thailand were leading 2-1 at one stage. 3 goals from penalties, 1 Thai, 2 Aussie.

I was at that game. 2-1 didn't really reflect the game. 77% possession, 45 shots at goal.

You can stuff yer stats up yer arse in most games.

I must admit that was a great night, found out he score in the morning;)

It was one of the most one sided games I've seen. Australia had to win by 5 or 6 to qualify automatically and they should have! Thailand were horrific that night. I think Thailand have a boy who's half Welsh playing for them too.

Indonesia (and the Philippines to a lesser extent) are the interesting countries to keep an eye on. Massive interest in the game and big crowds and if they could ever manage to get a decent team together it would be very interesting.
