It's an absolute nonsense that players are banned for taking recreational drugs anyway. Bans should be for performance enhancing substances only.

There's a very credible argument to be made that football authorities don't take the risk of cheating through doping close to seriously enough and WADA are right to be on FIFA's case for it, but banning someone for 12 months for taking cocaine, which has no performance enhancing qualities, is ridiculous.

Aye, the level of drug testing in football is nowhere near what it is in athletics. I'm pretty sure the FA released figures suggesting that c40% of players at the 92 PL and FL clubs hadn't been tested in the previous year whereas an Olympic athlete would probably be tested on a monthly basis.
