what's the plot with İstanbul Başakşehir - only formed in 1990, and owned by the government ministry of youth and sport, they appear to now be top of the table !

sponsored by Medipol Education and Health Group, which seems to be the commercial arm of a university hospital; their manger's been there for twelve years - apart from a two year sabbatical in charge of the national team, and their team looks to be little more than a retirement home for old arsenal players

does anyone go and watch them (can't find any attendance figures) or are they just some kind of genetically engineered freak of a club - there seem to be all manner of mooted tie ups with the Erdoğan regime ?

liking the blue and orange (leave it) colours, mind...

ETA - having now made a modicum of effort, i've found the following article which explains pretty much everything:

BAŞAKŞEHIR: THE CONTROVERSIAL STATE-BACKED CLUB THREATENING TURKEY’S ESTABLISHED ORDER

Nae c**t watches Başakşehir. I've never even met a Başakşehir fan. Başakşehir is a new neighborhood in Istanbul and nobody there has any particular allegiance to the area, it would take me two and a half hours to get there by public transport.

I saw them in the derby against Kasımpaşa earlier this season and there were only sixty Başakşehir fans. In comparison, newly promoted Ankaragücü (five hours away) sold out their allocation a few weeks later.

Başakşehir are cronied up to their arse, very tight with Erdoğan and the folk in power. One Fenerbahçe fan I know refuses to use Ispark car parks as they're run by the council and "7 of every 10 lira I spend there goes straight to Başakşehir."

As if their plastic nature wasn't embarrassing enough their stadium is named after their rival's (Galatasaray) manager (Fatih Terim), though that can also be said of Trabzonspor (Beşiktaş, Şenol Güneş).
