Scotland v USA (at life)

Recommended Posts

My employer is American and I deal with colleagues there on a regular basis. From things they have said, as well as the number of American colleagues who have moved to Europe and Hong Kong within the company and decided not to move back, I get the impression it's not a particularly great place to live for most people.

You're describing folk from every country who decide to emigrate because they find elsewhere better than their home country. Very common phenomenon.

Around 1 million people emigrate to the US each year, and I presume the vast majority 'decide not to move back'.

How is Scotland backwards in comparison to America exactly?

how's the Scottish space programme coming along - I know that Montgomery Christopher Jorgensen was integral to the smooth running of the Enterprise, but other than that ?

and I don't think that PC World in Strathkelvin Retail Park is too much of a threat to Silicon Valley, either

;)

80% of them are moving from South America or Asia. I'd guess a large majority are moving from relatively poorer, less stable countries where moving back would only leave them much worse off in terms of current circumstances as well as future prospects.

I know several people here who have moved to the US with our company and moved back because they much preferred it here. I don't know any Americans who have moved here and then gone back through personal choice.

Well yes, exactly.

Personal anecdotes, and again it also works in both direction, regardless of the country, but yes generally from relatively poorer to relatively richer. I have dozens of US friends met abroad who moved back to the US, and yes some who didn't.

Again, 1 million per year.

I've nailed a couple of hot Americans due to my accent. Highly recommended.

That aside, everything is HUGE which is an advantage/disadvantage dependent on your personal preferences.

Too much bible crap everywhere.

Food is crap (aside from certain big cities).

Weather is better.

Women are much hotter.

Public transport is mostly shit.

People seem to be dumber (guess there's more of them).

People are super polite.

Personal anecdotes, yes, but it doesn't make my opinion wrong, much like you repeating "1 million per year" doesn't make you right.

Moving from one highly developed, westernised, modern country to another is vastly different to moving from an emerging or under developed country.

There are folk working for my company in the US doing broadly the same job as I do. They get paid less, work longer hours and get fewer holidays. The longer hours and fewer holidays aspect seems generally common when compared to most developed, western nations. There are also a higher % of Americans living below the poverty line than in most developed, western nations.

I can see why a million people a year would rather live there than in some other places, but that doesn't mean it is a great place to live.

I get the Murca-hate, honestly I do, easy largetarget and all that. I even heard it from some of my dozenstm of Murican friends, and hundreds more acquaintances and colleagues, many of whom I met while living and travelling in the magnificent country (with problems) that it is.

I'll take 1 million per year and my own experiences over a P&B rando, tho.

I'm not sure you understand the meaning of hate to be honest, even within the context of this thread.

I saw more variation in scenery and climate going from Inverness to Skye than when I took a Greyhound from New York to New Orleans. And the people don't understand that civil discourse can include gentle teasing, their heads explode. No wonder they're always shooting each other.

I'll accept your tap out with the good grace and wisdom of my very well-travelled self.
