Just a wee outburst but it saves a mega rant blocking the forum.

Christ, what do the "extreme" right want to do? Open lynchings in the street?

It's called "Reconquest".

Led by Eric Zemmour the 'Great Replacement'... 'French Suicide'... 'First Sex'... theorist/author.

Over the next few weeks the we’ll see the full wrath of the liberal commentariat unleashed on the working class of these countries because of their supposed support for the far right. If you look at the national elections in France and Italy for example it is clear that it is not the working class that vote for the far right in large numbers.

So the ‘liberal commentariat’ will deliberately and knowing claim working class people who are not voting for the far right are actually voting for them?  What’s their purpose in doing this?

If It happens maybe you can post some examples.

To blame anyone except those of a similar social standing to themselves and to deflect away from the massive shortfalls of centrist parties all across Europe.

That’s a very strange response.  It’s like you’re trying to deflect from something you claim is going to happen.

Who put Farage on TV constantly in the last 15 years?  How did he become such a force, who facilitated his rise? Our liberal media, with BBC especially complicit.

Across Europe, the liberal establishment doesn't seek to confront fascism it seeks to co-opt it. To just make sure the fascists support militarism and don't tax corporations, that they don't interfere with elite interests generally.

Von der Leyen is the best current example of the liberal establishment bending with fascism, leaning in to it rather than opposing it, described here:

Put succinctly:

Starmer last week was desperate to tell us how pro-nuke and anti-immigration he is. He was attacking the Tories using the same lines as Farage. He described Sunak as "the most liberal PM we've ever had on immigration".

This US-style dynamic of only a liberal or fascist option as the electoral choice suits them just fine. Fascists have always been the attack dogs of liberals, providing a hard edge to their battle against socialism. They hate democracy, its a potential threat to their interests. So if the only thing animating an otherwise inert populace is some idiot (who they keep on a leash) yelling about immigration, they're happy with that. Keeping folk as depoliticised as possible except for nonsense issues.

All that might be true but it wasn’t the point I questioned was it?

My mistake. If you can be bothered, can you explain again what your contention was?

Yeah the claim was that the ‘liberal commentariat’ will claim working class people will vote for the far right in France and Spain when in fact they’re not doing so.  I questioned that.

I’d imagine, like in the U.K., following a major election in these countries there will be reputable polling organisations that will analyse the voting patterns of various demographics and report accordingly.

I cannot see the mileage in the ‘liberal commentariat’ misreporting these findings.

FWIW following our GE it will be interesting to see post-election analysis of which demographics were the main supporters of Reform.  I predict older voters across the board and, in some geographical areas, C2, D and E social categories.

I haven't delved into the details of the right wing advances across Europe, but given that Jacob Rees-Mogg has called for a Tory electoral pact with "Reform" and Suella Braverman has said that she'd welcome Farage into the Tory Party, we've got enough to worry about here.

Ok, thanks, I understand now.

I think there's definitely scope to argue that about Meloni in Italy. Her economics are right wing which has alienated working class voters. Here's, ironically, a liberal outlet suggesting as much:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/article/2024/jun/01/italy-giorgia-meloni-pm-european-elections-sceptical

Le Pen is quite different. Her economics are to the left of Macron which might appeal to a chunk of (strictly ethnic French) working class voters.

I'm not too concerned about the Euro elections, the member states made sure the parliament has minimal power so people treat it as a protest vote with few consequences. Farage lost seven Westminster elections on the trot, but still managed to find a seat on the Brussels gravy train which he sooked up to the max. I think UKIP even won the most seats one year, what happened to them. Le Pen will have to get 50+% of the second vote to get power in France, which is highly unlikely. Centrist parties are still more likely to collaborate to defeat extremists rather than join them.

P. S. It's very possible I have the French electoral mechanics totally wrong..
