"It is not news that Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings treat rules with contempt. But there is one rule even they might be expected to obey, because it is crucial to the maintenance of power. Never, ever, make the people who place their faith in you feel like fools."

You need equally stupid people to achieve that.

QED

Nobody likes a smart-arse, old man.

ETA: Sorry, I thought I was replying to GD. You may well be in the prime of life, in which case I humbly apologise.

Still a smart-arse, mind.

Political genius right enough. Reminds me of a line in 'Rivers of London' where the main character works as a police officer in the Met.

"We can handle looking heavy handed, cruel or even racist. The thing that really damages us is when we look stupid."

1. I am beyond 'prime of life'......so Mrs. FP assures me........

2. Never considered myself a smart-arse but if that's a back-handed compliment, I'll take it......

Excellent letter hope you get a response. I wrote to Alastair Jack in his role of secretary of state for Scotland I know I won't get a reply but it's good for these guys to see their mail bags going ballistic

Well, if I get the usual response from him, the next email will inform him that my first communication, and his reply, will be getting aired as far and wide as possible. We'll see how it goes. I'm not sure he'll understand at the moment how it's not just rabid wee lefties like me, but the entire electorate that are pissed off. That is the message that needs to get through.

More senior Tories coming out now, this boy's a Committee Chairman.

This is Johnson's Gordian knot. Or to remind ourselves of Armando Iannucci's observation......

"The PM’s dilemma. Keeps Cummings: loses the trust of the nation. Sacks Cummings: Johnson goes back to what he always was, a furtive bag of nerve endings and purposeless muscles piled inside an ill-fitting politician costume."

Kuenssberg saying none of the Scottish Tory MPs will agree to replace Ross

Interesting. Is this an agreement between them, or handed up from further down?

Haven't seen anything from Carlaw on the matter yet - I think he's in hiding.

That's not actually too bad considering the poll is taken in the middle of the current news cycle. I'd be looking for much worse numbers than that and/or more negative figures in a few weeks' time to be confident that it has damaged their public standing.
