Had a problem with my controller for a while now where it can be fine for weeks then go through spells of cutting out completely mid game, no light on the controller and the only way to shut down the PS4 is to hold down the power button until it hard shuts down.  Ended up breaking an external hard drive shutting down the PS4 this way.

Any suggestions for fixing this?  Have tried resetting the controller many times and did some kind of reset on the PS4 itself (not factory reset) with the idea being that when the machine started back up again it'd sync with the controller which seemed to work until today.

Would rather not spend £50 on a new one but will do it however someone involved with tech repairs said the problem might not necessarily be with the controller and getting a replacement controller might just be a waste of cash.

This is the console reset that I didn't explain very well above.

With your PlayStation 4 turned off, press and hold down the power button until you hear two beeps; one when you first press the button and then a second beep after about 8 - 10 seconds. Once the second beep is heard, you can unplug your console from its power source. Leave your console unplugged for a couple of minutes. This gives your PS4 time to cool off, reset, and do what electronics do when you turn them off and on again. Reconnect your power cable and plug your controller into the console again with that convenient USB cord. When you start your console back up, your controller should resync.

Have you tried plugging it in when it cuts out?

I started playing with it plugged in when it started cutting out thinking it'd help.  Can play wireless then plug in if it cuts out.

It can go a long time ok without cutting out, it's not a big deal doing the hard shut down of the PS4 now and again but means I can't use my replacement external hard drive in case it breaks it again.

Just had the problem again and held power button down until it beeped once to shut down as usual when this happens. Always get a warning message when I restart after doing this and it wrecked an external hard drive.

Been reading online and it's been recommended to hold the power button down until it beeps for a second time as mentioned above. Anyone know if that'd safely shut down the PS4 and not potentially damage an external hard drive instead of leaving it to shut down after the first beep? Would be good if so.

Got a new controller today and still getting the problem with it disconnecting.

I'm going to do a factory reset /re-initialise.  Once done, I've seenw I can access my saved data from PS Plus cloud storage.  Is there anything else I should be taking into account?

Sounds like there's something faulty on the motherboard of your ps. Do you run it with an ethernet cable or wireless?

Still getting the same issue.  Any idea what the problem is?  Will try to get it repaired, no point buying a new one with the PS5 on the way.

I'd imagine it is something on the motherboard but I'm far from an expert on ps4s. Just sounds like whatever part the controller connects to on it is loose/ faulty.

Was looking at prices for replacement ones on ebay. Won't be able to do anything until repair shops are back open though.
