DrewDon
I've always been a bit confused about how David managed to win the board's vote against Neil to succeed Jennifer at the end of Series 1. I suppose David will have been there longer than Neil and that will be a contributing factor, but it's one of the few times that I do momentarily pause to think about whether there is an element of truth to David's claims of a 'stitch-up'. Jennifer is also noticeably much more friendly and less hostile with David in Series 1, especially at the beginning, which makes me think that he has made a very different impression on her before filming begun.
BawWatchin
"Well, there's good news and bad news. The bad news is that Neil will be taking over both branches, and some of you will lose your jobs. Those of you who are kept on will have to relocate to Swindon, if you wanna stay. I know, gutting. On a more positive note, the good news is, I've been promoted, so... every cloud. You're still thinking about the bad news aren't you?"

For me, it's a scene that encapsulates the genius of The Office. Brent is incompetent, attention-seeking, delusional, crass, cringe-inducing, horribly insecure, so many other things. But still, despite all that, I end up cheering for him at the end and wanting the best for his potential relationship with Carol.

Think it’s implied that he let the filming go to his head. Being on the cover of that magazine as well suggests he was viewed positively in the company.
