Yeah, I was pointing out that it did not fit at all as an example of what your post was actually about; needing to win against a team we had already failed to beat.

accies1874
The reason we are going to the Euros is because McLeish played some attacking football and got 3 wins in the group scoring 10 goals. Clarke's tactics got us two draws which the players converted to wins with great penalties but our attacking play is utter pish and not something that Clarke is likely to improve. This is just absolute nonsense.

Needing to take three points from a team in the final fixture who he had previously failed to beat already in the group. Brown versus Belgium, McLeish versus Italy, Burley vs Holland, Levein versus Spain, Strachan versus Slovenia. We probably only got to that point because of the Czech Covid cases. McLeish wasn't the manager in the previous game against Italy. Strachan's team beat Slovenia at Hampden. So... Not really a trend at all then.

It probably should also be noted that Italy were World Champions, Spain were European Champions (about to reclaim their title ) and World Champions (beating that Netherlands side in the final). That leaves us with a game against Belgium which wasn't the final fixture in the group. So, probably best to file this algorithm under 'pish'.
Lurkst
Apart from 74 and 82, I don't think we've ever qualified with a game to spare. The worst ordeal being Italia 90 where one point from the final 3 games would have done and we almost blew it

An absolute terrible goalkeeper, Goram much better Leighton was a great keeper, Goram slightly better but Leighton was quality. Big bandy legged b*****d, really top class keeper. You don't have the career he had if you're shite, he was excellent. He had a couple of high profile bad moments but that shouldn't take away from the hundreds and hundreds of games he played at an extremely high level. Aberdeen were one of the best and most successful teams in Europe when he was there, then he as at Man Utd. That's top drawer.

As mentioned above the Sweden game at Ibrox was probably the best performance ever by a Scotland goalie. We had the tightest defence in Europe in the mid 90s, and Jim was an integral part in achieving that.
