Melbourne Victory won the 2021 and last ever FFA Cup on 7th Feb defeating the Mariners 2-1. For the 2022 competition and beyond it will now be known as the Australia Cup. The first preliminary games for 2022 were on 11th Feb in Victoria and Queensland. Two tier 10 sides knocked out tier 8 sides in VIC with Mildura City (10) having a walk over v Bell Park (8) and East Bentleigh Strikers (8) walked over by Tatura (10). In QLD Centenary Stormers (5) lost 0-4 to Ridge Hills United (8) and Mooroondu FC (8) thumped Rockville Rovers (5) 7-2. Some more ties in VIC, QLD and NNSW this weekend.

Hard to get excited about the A-League this season but @Jacksgranda NPL SA kicks off tonight with Adelaide City v Campbelltown City. They finished 2nd and 3rd on the table last season. Game is on https://npl.tv and there is an app but not sure if either have location restrictions also not sure if still available on YouTube. Game starts at 09:00 GMT.

On Sunday Perth Glory play only their second game of the season in Perth. The other game was their first of the season against Adelaide United (1-1) who just happen to be their opponents again.

The Sturridge signing has certainly been a massive let down. I doubt we'll actually see him play again this season. Which is a massive disappointment.

The Nomads, aka Western (not so) Ushited are at home to Perth Glory just now. This is being played in Launceston, their fifth “home” venue this season after Geelong, Melbourne and 2 venues in Ballarat.

Tomorrow Wellington Phoenix play the Mariners in their first league game of the season in New Zealand. Their last game was a rescheduled away game against Perth Glory in Sydney on Wednesday and one report listed the crowd as 98. There will be a few more in Wellington tomorrow and will be interesting to see if they get close to last seasons return home 24,000+. Phoenix have been enforced nomads and this genuine home game will be their 7th venue this season with an 8th next week in Auckland.

Sydney FC received a smack on the hands and a $5,000 fine for breaching U23 player requirements. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-04-15/sydney-fc-fined-for-youth-rule-breach/100994092

Adelaide United ensure that Perth Glory will finish bottom of the league this season. The Reds second goal was a cracker from local, although born in Tanzania, 16 year old Nestory Irankunda

The last game before the A-League finals series is tonight between Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC. Roar will finish 2nd bottom regardless of the result but SFC can move from 8th to 7th with a win. Last night Melbourne City lifted the Premier’s Plate after defeating Wellington Phoenix 2-1. They finished top 1 point ahead of Melbourne Victory with the other Melbourne/Victorian side Western United a further 3 points behind in 3rd place. No Sydney side made the finals as Adelaide United finishing 4th, Central Coast Mariners 5th and Wellington Phoenix 6th. Perth Glory finished bottom. The finals games are Elimination Finals May 14 Western United v Wellington Phoenix, May 15 Adelaide United v Central Coast Mariners, Semi Finals May 17 Lowest ranked EF winner v Melbourne City with 2nd leg May 21, May 18 Highest ranked EF winner v Melbourne Victory with 2nd leg May 22. Grand Final on May 28.

Have had hardly any interest in this season as a combination of COVID disruptions early in the season and the TV/streaming rights going to Channel 10/Paramount+. Crowds have been poor, even after restrictions lifted. Hopefully the league and broadcaster can gets their act together before next season.

Louis 'its fucked' Fenton has retired from professional football to pursue a property management degree in Queensland & has signed with NPL Queensland team Queensland Lions. One my favourite peak A-League moments.

Was up in Darwin last weekend. Went to the Thursday night markets on Mindil Beach so I'll be cheering for the Aces!

Last night in Cairns Edge Hill lost 0-5 to Magpies Crusaders in the last Preliminary Round tie. So Mackay & Whitsundays Magpies Crusaders United will be at home to A-League’s Macarthur United in Mackay later this month.

In other news word is that Nani might be signing for Melbourne Victory.
