European Super League.

If these clubs want to break away and form their own league is there any legal way to stop them?  What's the notice period required for resigning from the Premier League?  Do  governments where these clubs play have any leverage?  I assume not but as far as I can see there isn't anything legally to prevent clubs resigning from everything, the EPL, UEFA, FIFA, and playing their own league.

FIFA will be bought off. No chance they deprive the World Cup, their number one earner, of all the top players.

Institutionally corrupt, they awarded world cups to Russia and Qatar, you think a European Super League is where they draw the line ?

Governments could make it difficult for them with Visas and the Tories have already hinted towards doing something like Corbyn's plan to give fans power on boards.

The main stumbling block is how do you launch a competition that everyone hates. The idea that fans are just going to happily trot along to Chelsea Vs Inter in September acting as if everything is normal is laughable. They are obviously gambling on launching this as a CL substitute then expanding but no one supports it. The clubs might think that they can replace their traditional fans with new ones but they can't do in the space of a summer or even a World Cup cycle.

Can't help but see some parallels with the formation of the SPL.  Can't remember the SFL being able to put up much of a fight and it managed to carry on.

That new profit-driven league setup went well though, didn't it.

Topless football next IMO.  Men's football I mean.

Not sure that the "super clubs" have the strong hand everyone thinks. Barca & RM are up to their eyes in debt, Spurs and Arsenal have new stadiums to pay off, Liverpool and United have to pay back on their leveraged buy outs, the Italian clubs have been financial basket cases for years. They're driven by desperation.

From UEFA's point of view this risks stopping the expanding inflow of money into the game. For the last 20 years a raft of billionaires, proxies for governments, shysters and petro-criminals have poured money into their chosen clubs. The next tranche of the uber-rich looking for something to put their ill-gotten gains into won't be interested if they're excluded from the top table.

The World Cup in Russia was a huge success.

They will object because once the Yanks are making huge profits off club football they will then ask why they aren't making any off the World Cup and the Euros.

FIFA will look at it long term and any erosion of the concept of national football associations running the whole game harms them. It's also worth remembering that they do redistribute a lot of money, something you will never see the Glazers or Kroenke do.

Barca must be really skint

Most of the clubs involved are operating with colossal debts which they've been able to get away with so far, but an implosion is far from unthinkable if CL revenue is not a year-on-year guarantee and losses continue to accumulate - combined with covid-related losses, creditors in the financial sector will have the knives pressed against directors' necks.

Fingers crossed on this going tits up and everyone involved doing a Rangers.

Of course they won't have.  It'll be like any other business where the staff simply get told about restructuring decisions made at board level.
"Hi John, this multibillion pound company wants to move your job abroad for profitability and we just wanted to know if you'd be happy with this before we go ahead with it" is the conversation that never happens.

If your employees are worth tens on millions of pounds each and could possibly walk away for free on a breach of contract it’s probably worth considering gauging some opinion on them. Not quite the same as John in accounts.

Imagine being one of the lads who spent a fortune on buying some shite like Leicester City or Burnley btw. All that money and now it’s worth absolutely f**k all. Those clubs will likely enter administration.

The SPL was backed by the SFA and was basically just a rebranding of the existing system, albeit one which hoovered up a bit more of the cash. Relegation and promotion remained in place and there was still a fairly steady movement of clubs.

Your probably right on that as the SKY and BT deals could be reduced. Could also hammer Rangers and Celtic if Champions League money is reduced.

Said it last night but it likely will mean that European income for the Old Firm is reduced.
