101
Has Raab been living under a rock for the last month this pace has been on the cards for 6 weeks, you would expect the foreign sec to watch international news from time to time. ETA, almost exactly 6 weeks ago one of the biggest military bases in Afghanistan was abandoned by the US as the Taliban approached, the base is only 60km from Kabul. https://nypost.com/2021/07/05/bagram-airfield-looted-as-us-forces-leave-afghan-base/ Edited August 16, 2021 by 101

ICTJohnboy
You know what a major crisis this is, when the Foreign Secretary has had to cut short his holiday, and do the usual media rounds with lots of hollow, mealy-mouthed words like he gives a shit about what's actually happening there.

My local MP, one James Heappey, currently some kind of junior minister at the MOD, was up for interview last night on CH4. Like all the rest, he sounded really useless. As you say, all the hollow words..... Edited August 17, 2021 by beefybake
scottsdad
There is nothing good they can say. The media are far too gentle on these politicians. They have abandoned Afghanistan. Whatever happens next there, the UK and US abandoned it. Wish the media would start using this kind of language.

The plain, factual, bottom line is that the US, UK etc were invaders.. Afghanistan has a long , long history of spitting out invaders. ( see the Rudyard Kipling poem 'The Young British Soldier (1898) ). The Taliban are not implants or foreigners, they are locals. The one possibility of a bright spot is that all the Afghan people male and female who have received decent schooling and education in the last 20 years don't just roll over and accept being dragged out of their homes and executed.
