St Mirren v The Rangers 2012 Sunday 24/10/21

Recommended Posts

FT 1-2
Didn’t really get going second half. They were happy to sit on their lead and can have no complaints about the result. Can analyse it to death but we simply lost a narrowly to a better team who will likely win the league again.
We certainly weren’t helped by losing three of our best players to injury. Felt we missed Erhahon when he went off, Flynn just doesn’t cover as much ground and was quiet. Tanser going off was a blow too, Tait is nowhere as near as good going forward.
Any chance of a late crescendo ended when McGrath picked up an injury shortly after we made our final sub. He hobbled around manfully for 10 minutes before being stretchered off. Not a good sign.
Oh well, onto Motherwell. We certainly won’t be naming an unchanged team for that one.

A terrible start,  completely outplayed by St Mirren and looked like we were in for a torrid time. Hagi showed his skill and brought us into the game and St Mirren struggled to deal with him.

Sakala just looks like he's not going to cut it, looks like a mistake in loaning Itten.

He jarred his knee in the turf in an earlier challenge and fucked his back by looks of it. Horrific and potentially very long term.

Looked like he was holding his abdomen, so don’t think it’s a knee injury. They didn’t put a brace on either.

However, still stands as injuries there can be horrible. Ian Ross missed the whole of the 00-01 campaign from an abdomen tear.

Sakala is terrible, straight out of the school of striker signings that Celtic usually make.

Aye, he won’t be here long if this is his standard. I really don’t see how he fits into our style of play.

Don’t get the worrying about Sakala. He’s a different type of striker to what we have, and that’s why we signed him. What he needs is balls in behind a defence or balls into space for him to chase. We’re not giving him that at the minute, which is why he isn’t looking good. Once we figure out how to incorporate him he’ll be fine, his metrics last season were brilliant.

Pretty routine performance really. St Mirren had four shots in the entire game.

I think my worry is that in 80% of matches we will be up against relatively deep defences which somewhat mitigates our ability to get him in behind as often as we need.

Which is a legitimate concern, but it’s rare for teams to do what St Mirren did today and still stick with a defensive system when you’re losing the game. Most teams will twist and try to attack, opening up space for us to hit on the counter. Even in this game, Sakala managed to spark an attack two or three times despite St Mirren not really attacking until they went down to ten.

Hes not a guy who’s going to start away to five man defences. But he is the guy who can come on in those games and turn a one goal lead into a two goal lead. He came very close to doing it today.

Yeah sorry thats what I kind of mean. His knee did jar into the turf but he went straight to his back rather than the knee.
