PauloPerth
Bizarre folk nominating Paul McStay or Barry Ferguson, both the stand out midfielders in Scotland of their generations. If both had a bit more ambition about them rather than being blinkered by their OF view of the world, they would have gone on to far better things down south or abroad. Definitely feel John Souttar, David Turnbull, Kevin Nesbit and James Forrest are all players who are overrated and overhyped. I can't think of many other players in my lifetime that have been given the opportunity to keep playing for Scotland regardless of how poor they performed as Forrest. He was bound to stumble into a few goals eventually. 38 caps ffs! Turnbull will look a world beater against the poorer teams in the league, surrounded by better players than the opposition, but very average in games against better quality teams. Souttar gets hyped like any Scottish defender who tries to play out from defence as if he's some kind of genius, completely forgetting his primary purpose is to defend. The fact that Nesbit is touted for international selection, is the perfect gauge of how poor the quality of Scottish strikers playing in the Premiership is right now. A very average player. Going to throw in Josh Doig and Lewis Ferguson. Doig looks decent, and may well go on to have a good career, but the money talked about and clubs supposedly interested in him is mind blowing. Ferguson is another who looks okay, but he's hardly a standout every week at this level. Talk of a £2m price tag seems crazy.

If you have a striker who scores 20, assists 1 and the support players rarely score then is that better than a striker and 2 support players getting around 10 goals each? It's a different sport altogether but I've always liked the fact the NHL use points as the indicator, with assists and goals combining for that total. He used him on the right against Tierney with a bit of joy as well. That was when Church was in the middle. The problem there was Church did the same as Rooney (but not as well) so you ended up with two goal scorers who weren't really doing anything else to bring others in to play. I'm probably scarred by the years of hearing how much good work our strikers were doing without troubling the net.

Always a big goal scorer against shite like Hamilton, St Mirren and Motherwell, but not trusted by any Celtic manager in European games or against any side that wasn't cannon fodder. Never trusted either by any Scotland manager, and anyway looked completely out of his depth in international football. As an added bonus, stupid as f**k and leaves a trail of kids with daft lassies all over the country. He's their fourth highest goalscorer of all time in Europe - only Henrik Larsson, Jimmy Johnstone and Chris Sutton have scored more.
wastecoatwilly
I quite like the contradiction in the title,a lot of McStay chit chat when he played with Burns he was brilliant when he played with Grant he was a stand out.

scottsdad
Sad to say but we Scottish fans are rubbish at over-hyping average players. The English are the masters here, drooling and talking endlessly about some player or other who changed their life and club but in reality were dross. I remember the 2010 World Cup. England started the tournament badly and were looking for some magic bullet to save them. The newspapers, 5Live, TalkShite and the likes started hyping up the return of Gareth Barry from injury as the answer to their problems.

Someone needs to go back to all those players in the Motherwell team from 18/19 and tell them they're vastly underselling themselves and that David Turnbull's goal every other game record was just because "he was surrounded by better players than the opposition".

Dons_1988
The most obvious take here is that the list of old firm players massively over hyped by the Scottish red top media could fill a book.
