There isn't one other than sensationalism. Your average Daily mail reader would assume any explosion at Chernobyl would be :

Where the reality would be (depending on which way the wind blows):

so knocking up the big containment structure was done for a laugh then?  Firing a stray rocket into it wouldn't cause a big explosion but would release a huge amount of radiation.

Johnson's speech is completely focused on finance. Putin has been focused on security in his public statements.

It sums up the difference in positions between the western nations and Russia with Ukraine and others stuck in the middle.

Quite frankly, finance is the only weapon we have. Regards Putin and security. Utter balderdash. What security does he need. He is an expansionist despot, who now has the world teetering on the edge of destruction. And it is all on him.

It’s because they are speaking about different things. Putin trying to justify his attack has to at least pretend it’s about security.

Johnson is focusing on finance as it’s our first weapon against him.

Yes, but I was more meaning that it's surely not the "threat" that some seemed to be making out.

What would be the point ??

The threat would be if the new safe confinement structure is damaged, it means you can't really continue preparations to dismantle the old, crumbling sarcophagus around the reactor safely, and the longer you wait it might end up falling to pieces releasing radiation.

It definitely is about security. What else could it be?

Ukraine has been talking about getting nuclear weapons, they have been waging war on a Russian population for 8 years and the USA and UK were building military bases in Ukraine with talk of Ukraine joining NATO.

Or that they think it would be a  suicidal tactical mistake to go head to head with a bigger force on that bigger force's terms?

Then why even bother to setup against them in the east then? For keeping up appearances? Were Ukraine banking on foreign backup?

Alternatively they were never going to get nuclear weapons, Russia has been waging war inside Ukraine for 8 years, and Ukraine never had a hope in hell of joining NATO.

yeah Putin what a b*****d eh?

you wouldn't catch the Americans invading a country and installing a (puppet) more favourable head of government ,.that said this invasion is far more dangerous and into a far less dangerous state than iraq ever was

putin has all the justification going by what the yanks have been doing or trying to do (see vietnam )since ww2

the russians got their way at the cuban missile crisis ,  didn't get the nato membership issue resolved with ukraine and are doing what they need to do now and bugger the consequences .

putin is a C*nt but he is a strong  C*nt .

At what point did I even allude to this ? I was commenting on the question of why Chernobyl seems so important. Strategically it is irrelevant, environmentally if a stray 2000lb bomb obliterated the sarcophagus is a different matter as you rightly stated.
