Highland Amateur Cup 2022

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, the North of Scotland's premier summer cup tournament is returning. Some familiar names appearing in the draw, long-standing clubs as well as some old names returning. Holders Wick Groats will be looking to defend their title, but they'll be seeing some stiff competition, not just from runners up Avoch, but Caithness rivals Pentland Utd will be hot on their heels. It's been over 15 years since the last Western Isles winner - is this the year? Hoping for a cracking tournament. Slight change in format this year, fewer entries means a regionalised first (and preliminary) round then all in from the second round. Sadly, no entries from Shetland this year, so Northern Isles section made up entirely of Orcadian clubs.

Big wins as expected for Avoch, Pentland Utd and Wick Groats. Loch Ness also humping rivals Inverness Athletic. Loch Ness v Wick Groats looking to be the tie of the second round, now it goes all in. No controversy as yet, but I'm sure it'll come. Portree v Highland Hospice was sadly postponed until Saturday 21st May due to a funeral.

Might take in the Loch Ness game assuming it's at Culloden Park. There's a pub nearby called the Blacksmiths, never been, and plenty buses from the city centre. I'm shamefully ignorant about Culloden.

The current Culloden team are sponsored by them. Prior to that I think they were Culloden Moor Inn FC. Will be an intriguing game, Groats are a decent team and current cup holders, winner here would definitely be amongst the favourites to take the cup. Swifts got dumped out unceremoniously by Staxigoe, so that's my personal interest out, but hoping to see a Caithness team go all the way again. The county league is always pretty competitive.

Welshbairn I read somewhere Blacksmiths is no more. It was a decent enough bar I was in it a few times in the early 2000s but not a patch on the Stratton back in the day. It's also long gone sadly. Smithton Hotel is still close enough and there is or was a bus stop up by the shops.

I'm calling a Groats v Stabs final at Harmsworth Park now (on or around 20th August)! Although Staxigoe will be a decent test for Groats and Pentland Utd have a tough draw. Good to see several island teams still in the mix and a guaranteed Western Isles club into the Quarter Finals.
