Aidan
A few years back Manchester United fought off the mighty Plymouth Argyle to sign Andy Kellet on loan from Bolton Wanderers.

Not a loan, but that reminded me of Tony Cascarino ending up there on a free at the end of his career. Everyone in England was scratching their head, as he had the reputation of being something of a haddie. IIRC, they played him in a different role and he scored a bucketload. According to Wiki, he still holds the record for the oldest player to score a hat-trick in Ligue 1.

It arguably wasn’t even our weirdest loan that season. We loaned Rangers David Bates then sold him to them for nothing. craigkillie
Rangers overpaid for him at that price.
Joey Jo Jo Junior Shabadoo
The loan that Billy Dodds got off Rangers was pretty weird.
Lyle Lanley
Phil Airey signing for Hibs on loan from Newcastle. Played one game against Kilmarnock before the loan being cancelled a month later.
bluearmyfaction
Weird one I remember is us getting midfielder Ingi Højsted from the might of B36 of Tórshavn, when we were still top flight. I think I was nearer to a first team spot than him.

Haris Vuckic played fairly regularly, Shane Ferguson was injured when they signed him but played in both play-off games and Remie Streete went off in the first half of his debut (a home defeat to Raith Rovers in the cup) with a suspiciously "I don't fancy this" looking injury. Kevin Mbabu and Gael Bigirimana both failed to feature, and it's fair to say they've had contrasting careers since.
