Champions League Final Liverpool v Real Madrid

The ref must've counted what was surely a block tackle by Konate on Valverde as actually an unintended deflection on a Valverde shot followed by a second unintended deflection on that Valverde "shot" by Fabinho.

That is such an enormous stretch to view it that way.

I think the forward has to receive the ball directly from an opponent deliberately playing it. Not from an opponent deliberately playing it which then bounces off a team-mate.

“A player in an offside position receiving the ball from an opponent who deliberately plays the ball, including by deliberate handball, is not considered to have gained an advantage, unless it was a deliberate save by any opponent.”

Yeah VAR ensured that the technically correct decision was reached.  It’s fair to question the rules but not the effectiveness of VAR.

The refs on the pitch gave the same decision, and they didn't f**k about for 20 minutes while everyone stood about.

While we’ll obviously never know, I reckon that if the flag hadn’t gone up the goal would have stood.

VAR couldn’t resolve it, so they left it to the on-field decision.

Thanks for going and digging this out. Very helpful to read. So this is a very bad rule then. It means a donkey defender could randomly boot it off a teammate's back and an opposition forward could be offside from that provided the defender's shit clearance was his first touch and an opposition player had touched the ball last before him.

Edit: I realise now this is wrong but I'll not delete and instead leave it here cos its funny how muddled I got.

Edit Edit: Actually, I don't even know. I've given up. Somebody smarter can work it out.
