Football is more about formations, however, the facts stand that we haven't qualified for a tournament using a back 4 since 1992. The last time we had a top class centerback was in the 90s with Colin Hendry. Our current crop of centerbacks are of an English Championship standard. So, essentially, we're playing EPL standard attacks with Championship standard defenders. The whole point of playing with an extra centerback is to plug the space. It's no more complex than that. I'm not going to debate the whole back 4 vs back 3/5 argument. I'll just let history do the talking. (96, 98, 2020, 2024) Plus I can't be bothered.
