Ref watch

There are far too many better quality refs being taken out the game to sit and watch video when there's guys equally or even more competent at making video calls but aren't able any longer ref on the pitch so are not being allowed to do any reffering.  I guess its different in leagues with very high amount of games televised and with FT referess,  its therefore not too bad to have a guy ref on a saturday and VAR on the sunday or vice versa.  But if the refs are only taking on one game a weekend they shouldn't be removed from the most important role to watch the video.

This, 100%  I can't remember where exactly it happened so can't pull the video but about 25 years ago there's a footage of english epl lino who went toe to toe with a manager( i want to say warnock) at HT over a poor decision.  He went full in 'what about the missed chance,  what about those misplaced passes, what about your guy getting skinned'  I think refs should have more power to ask those questions over being expected to beg for forgiveness or double down over a mistake.

Many refs get punted a season for being shite compared to managers, c***s are protected enough without whataboutery on players and managers pish.

If there was a deep enough field of referees that we could just empty someone for having a bad few weeks you could have an argument, there quite simply isn’t tho.

The idea refs shouldn't be criticized because players make mistakes is just silly. Officials poor decisions do effect the outcome of the game, wrongfully awarding a red card, awarding a penalty and it later being shown as the wrong decision, not awarding a pen, etc, if they've been poor they deserve criticism for poor officiating. Managers and players get blamed for poor results too, the officials don't deserve that as a whataboutery excuse for poor officiating.

I don’t think anyone is saying you can’t criticise a poor decision. Just that they’re often overly blamed for results.   A team has their striker miss a sitter in the same game as having a penalty wrongly given against them.  Who is the one getting picked out at the end of the game for costing the side?  It’s nearly always the ref which is quite silly.

Referees and assistants won't want more power because with that would come more responsibility and accountability to answer to their calls.

If there was more openness for their decisions it wouldn't be so bad, but they hide away after a game, and dismiss anyone questioning a decision during the game, everyone makes mistakes, it's the arrogance of those c***s that gets on your nerves, behaving like a jobs worth traffic warden that hasn't had his hole for 10 years.

Believe me, the players and manager get as much, if not more criticism for being poor, fans aren't slow in handing out criticism for poor performances, esp if it happens several games in a row. However Refs not taking any responsibility for a shit performance deserves everything they get, maybe if they were more open to explaining decisions, and admitting they got some wrong, they'd get a bit more slack, being mic'd up for fans to hear what they're saying would help, and some post match interviews. It was quite interesting being at our game against Brechin, being so close to the pitch you could hear the lino talking to the ref in his mic.

Talking about former refs on VAR duties, in the EPL there was Lee Mason and Mike Dean doing it this season - except Mason was relieved of his role after messing up an offside check and Dean stepped down at the end of the season. Don't think it's as simple as just putting retired refs into VAR roles, as it's a different skillset.

Managers who get sacked should join the refereeing ranks until they get a new job.

It would boost the number of referees, and prevent John Hughes from being on Sportsound all the time...

Defenders getting booked for playing a through ball into midfield instead of a pass back to the keeper or a long ball.
