Right. We can solve this… Here’s a map. WeegieLand to Auld Reekie. Basically it goes Glasgow - Coatbridge - Harthill - Whitburn - Bathgate - Livingston - Broxburn - Ingliston - Edinburgh. Somewhere, there’s a chippy(er) that changes from their default offering being salt & vinegar, to salt & sauce. Maybe even in one town. You’ll get vinegar at a chippy(er) in the West of town, but sauce at a chippy(er) in the East of town. It is a fact that somewhere along this route - it changes. Who on P&B lives in any of these towns, has had chips in these towns, or who knows someone who once had a smoked sausage supper in Whitburn one night? The answer is out there…

Come, come, the internet menu is the answer…West End Fryer in Whitburn defaults to sauce, while Ali’s and Tony’s (both further East) offer both, with neither a default. Perhaps the answer is in Bathgate? The basic problem is here we have a sauce choice to the West.

I’m off to Bathgate for chips come January. Test the waters there. 😎

When I first bought chips in Dunbar years ago they didn't give you sauce. Now they do. The Edinburgh exodus has extended the sauce belt eastwards past Aberlady.

“Gentlemen, from Denny on the Carron to Langholm on the Esk an iron curtain has descended across the nation... behind that line lie all the settlements of the ancient lands of Scotia... Glasgow, Stirling, Dumbarton, Paisley, Ayr, Dumfries; all these famous places and the populations around them lie in what I must call the vinegar sphere... and all are subject, in some form or another, not only to vinegar influence - but to a very high and in some cases increasing measure of Sarson control.

Gentlemen, if I were asked the difference between sauce and vinegar, then I could only reply that sauce tries to lead us to disaster only if diluted, whilst vinegar tries to drive us there by violent deeds. No vinegar system can be established without a condimentalist police. Vinegar is like a crocodile - when you open its cap, you cannot tell whether it is trying to flavour chips, or to drown you.

Harthill is the seasoning frontier of this ideological divide. Beyond it lies only tyranny”.
