Arctic Monkeys

My 13 year old told me yesterday that this is her favourite band. Bit of a bolt from the blue as i thought she was very much into girlie pop.

I know very little about them but pleased to see some rock making an impact.

So...in the interests of finding common ground with my kid, where do I start with these? Are they good? What are their best songs?

Spotify. Early stuff was their best material imho. Can’t go wrong with much on the first releases. Alex Turner is very marmite. Talented but a bit kinda mental.

Quite surprised you never heard about them at the time. Huge impact very quickly in their profile and massive at festivals like TITP.

It’s also my 13 year old daughter’s favourite band, I noticed she was downstairs watching tv tonight which is almost unheard of, it was someone’s special subject on mastermind.
My wife and me have zero musical ability so very pleasing when she asked for an acoustic guitar for Xmas and seems to be able to play it.

Don't bother, the last thing she needs at 13 is you cramping her style being down with the kids.

TBH&C is their best album.

Agreed, by a distance. A brilliant album that filtered out all the bucket hat wearing, Dark fruit swilling Oasis listening plebs. Unfortunately The Car was awful

1. TBH&C
2. Suck it And See
3. AM
4. Humbug
5. WPSIATWIN
6. Favourite Worst Nightmares
7. The Car

I've always loved the riff from Do I Wanna Know, and the drum intro on Brianstorm is fucking brilliant. Everything else I've heard from them.....fairly meh.

Actually, in fairness I do like a lot of the stuff of the first album. It's a proper time-stamp of life at a time I have particularly good memories of in general. I wasn't listening to Arctic Monkeys but much like The Fratellis and The View, the songs were everywhere and when I hear them they always take me back to then, which is one of my favourite things about music.

I have tried, I really have. But I just cannot get into them.

A few decent (and no more than that) songs.

This is better anyway. Let her have her own things and just quietly enjoy that she's on a reasonable path!

That record with Library Pictures and Moved Your Chair etc is pretty good. Tbh have nothing against them but there's an ocean of music out there and (they're) never the thing I want to seek out.
