David Marshall - Retired

We'll be lucky if we ever see an active set of goalkeepers as good as Gordon, McGregor and Marshall again

Three very good keepers. There was a period during which I didn't think it really mattered which keeper started, as we had three keepers who we could rely on.

I always considered Marshall to be ever so slightly the lesser of the three. However, Gordon and McGregor never delivered a save of the magnitude and importance that he did.

Good lad. Did very well for us. He was unlucky to be playing at a time when we were flush for quality keepers.

Mind watching that Barcelona game when he was a teenager; some performance at that age.

For me Gordon was quite clearly the best keeper of the three. He was completely unbeatable under Walter Smith at times, got a series of bad injuries that looked to have curtailed his Scotland career, but then rolled back the years and was excellent through our pretty decent (but ultimately unsuccessful) 2022 World Cup qualifying run and our nations league promotion to league A.

Maybe I’m being biased due to my personal like of Marshall and dislike of McGregor but I think Marshall is at very least joint second of the three and might even be a clear second.

McGregor twice abandoned Scotland at their time of need. c**t IMO.

164 caps between them, a golden generation of keepers.

I think I’m right in saying no keeper other than those three managed to reach five caps between Gordon making his debut in May 2004 and Gunn facing Norway away in June 2024.

There was Neil Alexander as well, who was a solid and dependable keeper. He was unfortunate to be playing at the same time as Gordon, McGregor and Marshall otherwise he could have got much more caps.

Jordan Archer and Scott Bain also featured in the 2nd McLeish era but were both pish.

Whilst I agree, he also had some pish like Iain turner being picked ahead of him for 3rd choice when one of them was out. It wasn't like he was demanding to be 4th in line.

I forgot about Turner. 113 club appearances in a sixteen year long career, and never doing anything worthy of being selected in the national squad. I wonder what the justification was for picking him?

Being on the books of an EPL side seems the only reason, with managers ignoring there was a reason he was struggling to get in the matchday squad never mind on the pitch.

Little doubt that he was third in line, which makes it all the more credit to him that he amassed 47 caps and will be more fondly remembered - for that save alone - than the other two.

Yeah plus he got himself sent off on the rare occasion he actually played for Everton.

More fondly than McGregor definitely. McGregor was a bit of a w**k tbh.

Gordon however served Scotland consistently over many years (except when he was out injured obviously) so that's more debatable. It's possible to remember both Marshall and Gordon with fondness though, we don't need to choose between them.

I do wish Marshall had reached 50 caps and entered the roll of honour. Less deserving players have done so.

WRT Craig Gordon I remember when we were playing Ireland at Hampden ( 2 - 1 )

and we gave the ball to them from one of our corners . Initial panic with their counter attack , but then a thought that the Irishman would probably have to beat Gordon in a one on one .

And so he did not
