Incidentally a different Scottish admiral also commanded the Royal Navy fleet which bombarded Fort McHenry at the Battle of Baltimore in 1814 that inspired the anthem ("... the rockets red glare, the bombs bursting in air..."). Yeah we've already done that above.

They scudded nobody. Ever. In 94-95, when McStay was turning 30, Celtic were the lowest scoring team in the Premier Division - he was playing with utter turnips at Celtic. Hell, he played alongside Peter Grant his entire career. It wasn't remotely similar to modern football (and the world was a very different place in 1992). And it wasn't like Brown or McGregor, who were happy to scud teams every week. Although he was a far far far superior player to both (and absolutely should have left Celtic). Wrong.

While it wouldn’t represent a great return for a present day Celtic player, it hardly merits the “diddy team” tag. Most genuine diddy teams (as in pretty much everyone not called Rangers or Celtic) haven’t won that much silverware in 100+ years of existence, never mind in a single 15 yr spell. It says a lot about their sense of entitlement that the “lean” spell used by Celtic fans to deny the fact their supporters are glory hunters (“look at our crowds in the 80s!!!”) would represent an absolutely golden period for fans of every other club in the country bar one.

Apologies, I wasn't meaning it in historical way (as if Celtic were diddies until they heroically rose from the ashes). I was meaning that, in the early 90s (when he was considering leaving), Celtic were at the same level as most of the teams in the league. You can't say that McStay chose to stay at Celtic so he could take it easy humping teams every week. That's not the way it was. In 1990, Celtic won 8 league games the entire calendar year. In 93-94 Celtic won 15 league games all season (in a 44 game season). They finished 10 points above relegation. They managed 11 league wins (out of 36) a year later. This time, Celtic finished 10 points above a play off place.

I think this is a good learning point - it is important that fans of clubs educate their fellow Scotland fans of the accepted nicknames for their players. Anyway we will pass it through the holes in their defence....
