Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 vs Switzerland 🇨🇭

In their game yesterday Switzerland looked to be everything we were not.

They looked well coached, full of confidence and with a potent attacking threat.

We looked like a poorly coached shambles, clearly low in confidence and like we couldn’t hit a coos arse with a banjo going forward.

It’s hard to see how this game doesn’t end in a Scotland defeat. We will need to play orders of magnitude better, hope The Swiss play worse, and we will need to carry a fair bit of luck.  If all of the above happens we could sneak something and keep our hopes alive to the Hungary game.

I suppose the one ray of light is that how Switzerland played is how we qualified in the first place.

Yes, we are missing a few key players from those days, but we have it within us to regain some of that level.

I think a lot depends on how bold we are - defence is a bigger issue now, and Gilmour really has to play.

To have a chance of qualification, we need 6 points imo. That means having a go. I'd rather get beat 3-0 having a go than sitting back inviting pressure.

I just can't see how we play or who we play to be able to do that. We have too many players out of form, not fully fit or both. Confidence is also in short supply.

Gilmour simply must start. He takes and moves the ball better than anyone in our team. He should be starting every single game for us really. Maybe stats would say otherwise but it seems to me that we give away possession significantly less when he plays. He provides an outlet and moves the ball instead of us being forced in to long punts (not always obviously, but more often).

Clarke hinted that he will start this game and we will go more on the front foot against Switzerland.

We weren't forced to make long punts, it was part of the game-plan not to take risks with the ball in our third of the pitch, we did the same against Spain (games Gilmour also didn't play in). If we had wanted to take those risks Gilmour would have started versus Germany. Gilmour doesn't make particularly risky or even creative passes. He links the game and probably his best attribute is receiving the ball under pressure.

I take it that a lot of folk don't remember/have never known this tournament format?

We draw with the Swiss and beat Hungary, and we're almost certain to qualify. It would take a remarkably close set of groups for us to go out as one of the worst third place teams. We can't even finish bottom with those results since the Swiss beat Hungary.

Beat the Swiss and draw with Hungary, and suddenly finishing bottom with 4 points becomes a possibility again, but would require Germany losing to Hungary and beating the Swiss to become a possibility. Either of those incredibly unlikely scenarios happen and we should declare war on God, as He clearly hates us.

Qualification is entirely in our own hands, and the team's very capable of achieving those results. Whether they're able to improve their performances enough is another matter. Fingers crossed.

If we get 4 points with a win over Switzerland we’d probably finish 2nd. 4 with a win over Hungary and we are probably 3rd and relying on the lottery of goal difference which we are already in trouble on.

The real nightmare scenario is we win the last two but Switzerland beat Germany.

How is this a nightmare? We would certainly progress as one of the best third place teams? This is the dream scenario!

We might not though. The only way to guarantee progression is to finish in the top two.

If we get six points (we won’t) then we definitely go through (we won’t)

I 100% promise we would be one of the best third placed teams if we finished on 6 points. Infact we would probably be the best placed 3rd team. In Euro 2020 teams were qualifying as best 3rd placed teams with 3 points.
6 points would be enough, 4 points should be enough, 3 points could be enough GD dependant - would need to win a game 5-0 to reverse our awful GD.

Swiss looked decent, Hungary looked poor though.

Swiss team is quite old I think but they will know that beating Scotland means instant qualification, I cant see us getting a draw even but who knows. Maybe we will do what we usually do and have a roller coaster of downs and ups. So on that note.

I predict we play a blinder and beat the Swiss and then lose to Hungary

Gilmour has to start, we couldn't keep the ball against the German press, we need to play our best and coolest passer. We were under constant pressure as we either gave it away in our own half or were forced to punt it long, where we lost it too.

Hanley to start for me too, we look much more organised as a defence when he's in the middle.

Jesus f**k.

It'll almost certainly not happen in Euro 2024 as by 1986 you'd still normally get nations at the World Cup who were well out of their depth, and two points for a win led to weaker sides being far more cautious, but here's the third place table for Mexico 86:

We could go through the other tournaments using this format and it wouldn't be hugely different - can we stop knicker-wetting about being knocked out with a win and a draw, or (FFS) even two wins?

the lack of energy against the germans was appalling, might of been nerves as in the tunnel before game. The germans looked well relaxed and we looked tense as f**k. That shouldnt be the same for this next game at least.

The only goal I thought he should have saved was the first one. Gunn will be fine. He’s still the best ‘keeper we have.

He probably is the best keeper we have but he had blame for 3 of the goals on Friday AND the one he got away with because VAR spotted Fullkrog offside. He had a poor game.

The 1st was the worst. Its not even close to the corner and he puts a full hand on it and fails to keep it out. The 5th's on him too. He gets his hand to that too and it wasnt struck that hard. He also fumbles a relatively tame header out centrally which creates the situation where Porteous gets himself red carded giving away the penalty for the 3rd. If he cant hold it he should be parrying that wide, not straight back out central.

Granted he's blameless on the 2nd and 4th.

🤣 behave.

Absolutely nobody is going home with 6 points from the group stages and you are the only Scot on the planet who thinks any connotation of us winning the next two is a 'nightmare scenario'. Bloody hell.

Thinking you might not qualify with 6 points is insane levels of panic merchant.

Couldn’t agree more. Switzerland looked very good.

However we have shown, not recently, that we can produce performances to beat teams of this level so I’m optimistically hoping for one of them.
