Ukraine were equally as bad on Monday. Which is good news for Scotland, considering Belgium lost yesterday as well.

Yeah Ukraine were pretty disappointing. Though I was also surprised at how well Romania nullified Ukraine when they were on the attack.

Steve Clarke should take note.

I see Germany are playing at three different cities in their first three group games. Fairly normal for a host nation except England of course, who somehow manage to play every game at Wembley every time they've hosted. Never see this mentioned. I think it's only them and Mexico (both times) where the host has played every match in their recognised home stadium. Certainly since 1966.

I'd imagine other countries could play all their home games at one venue if they chose to, but choose not to.

A quick look on Wikipedia reveals that Austria, Switzerland, Belgium and Sweden all played all their matches at one venue, since the Euros moved to a group stage format.

As you say, Mexico played all their games in one place, and the 1978 World Cup was set up so that Argentina would play all their home games at one venue, but they messed it up by finishing second in their opening group.

1. Spain 6 - Maximum points in the group of death without even conceding a goal.

2. Germany 6 - Hosts are looking dominant.

3. Portugal 6 - Struggled a bit against Czechia but emphatic yesterday.

4. France 4 - Don’t look as strong as in previous tournaments.

5. Netherlands 4 - Unlucky not to beat France.

6. Switzerland 4 - Excellent on day one and pretty decent against us.

7. England 4 - Laboured to a win in the first game but were awful against Denmark.

8. Italy 3 - Really unconvincing from the champs.

9. Austria 3 - This team could be a dark horse to go far if the draw falls kindly.

10. Belgium 3 - Would be coasting if not for VAR.

11. Romania 3 - Poor last night but excellent against Ukraine.

12. Turkey 3 - Still looking good to go through.

13. Slovakia 3 - Probably need a point against Romania.

14. Ukraine 3 - Might well go out even with four points.

15. Denmark 2 - Two draws so far, will a third be enough?

16. Slovenia 2 - Two decent draws, but really feel they needed to win won of the first two.

17. Serbia 1 - They’ve been disappointing. Very late equaliser away from being near the bottom.

18. Czech Republic 1 - Need to beat Turkey.

19. Scotland 1 - Much better in the second game. A win against Hungary *should* be enough.

20. Albania 1 - To their credit, they’ve taken the lead against two well fancied teams. But 1 point out of 6 from winning positions won’t get you far in this tournament.

21. Croatia 1 - Is the golden generation finally over?

22. Georgia 1 - Decent performances but it’s not looking good for them.

23. Hungary 0 - Still just about alive, but they need to beat us and have some snookers.

24. Poland 0 - RIP.

Good summary this. Overall much better Euros than the last two 24-team jobs. Minnow nations expected to get whupped - Albania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Georgia - all improved sides. Enjoyed watching them. Top 6 Group seeds all likely to win their groups. The 3 play-off chancers all likely going out. Ukraine going out on 4 points is Euros karma - they were rotten last time but got through with 3 pts and a NEG GD. They won’t be missed. Prob Switzerland v Italy/Croatia in R16…I fancy the Swiss against either. Austria superb, a template for us. Great tournament so far.

Helps that none of the teams are coached by Guardiola or one of his disciples. Means teams actually attack, fling crosses in from wide, make use of set pieces and shoot from distance. Watching club football, especially from England, is going to be so shite after this.

Game's all about opinions. I would have paid good money to watch Xavi and Iniesta play keep-ball on a pitch with no goals.

Updated rankings after the group stage

  1. Spain (9) - 3 wins and no goals conceded. They look ominous.
  2. Germany (7) - Poor performance in game 3 but they still won the group with a late equaliser.
  3. Portugal (6) - Lost to Georgia, but they had nothing to play for and one eye on the knockouts. They’ll come good again.
  4. Austria (6) - This team could go all the way to the final.
  5. Switzerland (5) - A real dark horse in the easier side of the draw.
  6. France (5) - Not convincing at all in the group stages.
  7. England (5) - Feels like the post mortem has already begun.
  8. Romania (4) - Another team that I think could continue to surprise in the knockouts.
  9. Netherlands (4) - Poor defeat to Austria but still have a chance to go to the semis.
  10. Italy (4) - Snuck through with a very late goal but it’s hard to see the defending champions going far.
  11. Belgium (4) - Golden generation is done. Cant see them troubling the French.
  12. Türkiye (6) - The phoniest 6 point team I’ve ever seen in one of these things.
  13. Georgia (4) - Historic moment for them and a massive f**k you to anyone who says the nations league C shouldn’t have a place in this tournament.
  14. Slovakia (4) - Pretty lucky to have gotten 4.
  15. Slovenia (3) - Valiantly snuck through with 3 draws. They won’t go much further but they’d have bitten your hand off for that outcome. Slovenian football is on the up.
  16. Denmark (3) - Nowhere near as good as last time.
  17. Ukraine (4) - RIP
  18. Hungary (3) - RIP
  19. Croatia (2) - RIP
  20. Serbia (2) - RIP
  21. Albania (1) - RIP
  22. Czechia (1) - RIP
  23. Poland (1) - RIP
  24. Scotland (1) - RIP

Scotland the worst team while other small nations punch above their weight.

Thanks Steve Clarke...

19 teams qualified for the last two Euros. A further 10 qualified for one but not the other (Wales, Sweden, Finland, Russia and North Macedonia dropped out to be replaced by Albania, Slovenia, Serbia, Romania and Georgia).

Of the 19, only 3 have been knocked out in the groups twice. Ourselves, Poland (who’s recent record is as bad as ours), and Hungary, who have been horrifically unlucky*

*Not only did they go out on goal difference this time, but last time they had the group of death and gave a very decent showing with a false 3-0 defeat to Portugal (0-0 in the 84th minute) and getting only a point each out of France and Germany who they both led, Germany twice.

I was at France vs Austria tonight in Düsseldorf and the atmosphere was amazing. The stadium was full of Scottish people. We were definitely the number 3 in terms of fans at the game behind France and Austria.

Phillipp Lahm loves the Scots.

"A lot of things come to a head in sport, and these Euros are no exception. That’s why culture is important. There’s no point in criticising major events in principle. Their value is evident these days. And in this sense, more Europe means being more Scottish."

Iv not clapped eyes on Phillip Lahm for years.

I'm still comfortable in saying if he'd have played Right Back for us we'd have made a much better fist of it.

How do European sports journos view England's campaign so far ? The Guardian offers a selection of opinions, however, Oliver Fritsch seems unconvinced.

"Southgate has built a solid framework – everything was under control against Slovenia. England, hard to beat, have a chance of winning the title. The Southgate debate is reminiscent of Brexit. A country dreams of being the motherland of football. But this mother is as alive as Norman Bates’s." Oliver Fritsch, Die Zeit (Germany)

Tough trivia question I struggled with. Name 3 players who have played at the Euros whose surnames are also Scottish place names? I got one. (no looking up the answers!)
