The poor/no use of a 26 man squad is a massive factor in our elimination.

After our annihilation against the Germans there should have been a mini reset in terms of approach and tactics but we went back to what had worked in qualifying. We got a draw (not a horrendous result) but the opportunity for more was there for the whole game.

Comes to Hungary a must win and more of a chance than we probably deserved. There's no Tierney a player we have effectively designed our entire formation around to accommodate. Adams has had 2 games where he has done the square root of f**k all and John McGinn who has been poor for at least 6 months played again.

The lack of a plan B for formation and personnel or any sort of attacking intention until it was 10 minutes of stoppages and then it's hit and hope park football.

We don't have a great squad but I'd suggest it's better/on a par with a lot of the so called minnows and was capable of far more than 3 shots on target in 3 matches.

And we have a team of full backs and defensive midfielders

The tempo and skill levels of other games/teams is just something I don't think we can match. Grind-out games with the Swiss and the Hungarians is pretty much where we are and even then we couldn't get the job done.

We look at our tactics against Germany but never discuss how Germany played when we had the ball. High tempo pressing that shut us down at the back with no reply, handing the ball straight back to them. There was more going on than just "should have had player A here and Player B there".

Having watched their friendlies against France and Holland, it was obvious they'd press high.  We took the one player we've got who is brilliant at playing through that and benched him.  Every team who turned Germany's midfield had some joy cause they were effectively playing one defensive minded player in the front 6 and Kroos could not be arsed running back the way.

The preliminaries to the European club competitions are on the horizon.

Our (Non Old Firm) clubs struggle against Cypriot teams, Norwegian teams, Lithuania teams, Slovakian teams, Finnish teams, etc, and yet there are Scotland fans who expecting Scotland to punch above their weight at international level.

Once our domestic football grows up, stops self-interest, and resets for the greater good, the sooner the national team will begin to benefit.

The inconvenient truth is that Scottish football doesn't want to improve. It's fine with surviving and not thriving.

You get a top coach like Angelo Alessio, who has coached world class players like Pirlo and Pogba, etc, then a mediocre player like Kirk Broadfoot who complains that Alessio's training is "boring".

Then you get dinosaurs like Kris Boyd mock Ian Cathro for daring to use a laptop and lean on player analytics and GPS, etc.

(Even though Boyd now works in the EPL. The analytical data in the EPL is akin to NASA)

The culture in Scottish football is what ultimately holds it back.

A whiff of "thinking outside the box" and revolutionary thinking and the empty barrels (who hasn't got ths balls to try coaching) blows his dog whistle and the torch and pitchfork welding troglodytes congregate en mass.

Scottish football is stuck in the dark ages.

Three league structural ideas:

- Alter 3 leagues of 10 teams and 1 league of 12 teams to 2 leagues of 18 teams.

- Insert a limit of the number of homegrown players in a matchday squad.

- Insert a limit of foreign players in a matchday squad.

And how many of those players are Scotland internationalist?

You fucking moron.

This thread is pretty depressing. Here's my take:

Most of the teams at Euro 2024 played "not to lose" rather than win but we were by far the worst at this tactic.

We play the Swiss and Hungary games the way we played our qualification games then we go through.

For some reason Clarke sh@t it and we deservedly went out. Let's not pretend we don't have decent players all of a sudden.

It was there to be seized and we chose to be cautious.

Forest has to come on at 60 mins v Hungary as does Shsnkland. Why they didn't I'd for Clarke to answer.

The build up was also awful. We should never have played England, France, Netherlands, NI or Gibraltar.

It should have been more winnable games v teams our level to sneak in to the comp full of beans and "under the radar".

Instead we exposed our weaknesses to all and totally lost momentum.

It started last October after the spain game imo

Scotland players are too good these days to play for non-OF (and indeed OF) SPFL teams. You must be thinking of Australia. they have Hearts, St Mirren, Dundee Utd player in their team. Still managed to beat Tunisia and Denmark and put up a fight against France and Argentina in the WC mind
