Football Manager 2025

I won’t be buying this as I’ll still be going on with my FM21 save (obviously) but it seems senseless to dingy international management. Even if they’re saying it needs revamped, surely you could just leave it in in this version and then do it the way you want next year?

I use the 2D graphics and all, and then replay goals in 3D. Find it much easier to see what’s happening tactically in 2D.

International management missing feels like a massive red flag about this game.

By their own words they've been developing this game with the Unity engine since 2021, and right at the end they've had to pull one of the most basic parts of the whole game because they can't get it working correctly. This "leaving it out to improve it" seems a lot of balls considering other bugged messes they've left in games then just patched as they go.

Don't care about the weight stuff. It has no impact on the game and most them are randomly generated anyway.

There’s a part of me that wants FM25 to fail so bad that Miles ends up being removed from his role. He’s the reason  why the game is so poor.

Should have been removed years ago and replaced with someone like Hideo Kojima.

It would be better if they perfected a base game and just updated the database and charged a small subscription fee instead of releasing a half-baked and buggy "new" version of the game every year.

Oi! Stop nicking my idea

I had high hopes for 25, with it being a complete rewrite. I barely played 23 and didn't even bother with 24, as the game hadnt changed.

The CEO cancelling trips to focus on the game and features being pulled last minute is always a good sign

I wish SI would nick the idea.

What do you mean by "wee highlights" specifically?

The highlights of simulated games? Only if I'm not managing the international side and one of my club players is playing. I'll sometimes watch the highlights to see assists and goals they score.

The actual match footage of teams I'm managing? Well yes. In season 1 of a fresh game, it's full match replay until I'm content that the team shape is how I want it, and from then on extended highlights so I can keep an eye on performance, clobber any particularly threatening looking opponent, sub player who are having a stinker etc

You watch full, 90 minute matches?

SI are removing the Inbox feature from FM25.

Yeah that bit where you get all the information about your game was irrelevant. You've got to wonder what they're doing now, seems a shambles.

Only at the start of a new game, and only until I'm absolutely happy that the team is set up precisely how I want it, players are where I want them to be, and the team is playing the football I envisaged rather than the football SI's misleading and idiotic "roles" system makes them play.

It's a hangover form the old wibble/wobble system that was perfectly suited to making small tweaks and giving precise instructions. When they did away with it in favour of the Roles system, they totally hamstrung the users ability to control cause and effect. "I want you to play a bit higher up the pitch" became "what the f**k does a Trequartista do, and how is it different from an Advanced Playmaker". Unfortunately SI's descriptors of the roles say nothing at all about how the are represented in the match engine, and in a lot of cases the player doesn't actually do what the role suggests anyway, so in order to set the team up precisely how I want it often involves totally counter-intuitive instructions, and fighting against SI's system rather than it helping me to do what I want.

I'm not sitting watching 20 years worth of full matches, it usually takes maybe 4-5 matches to get it right, then its just extended highlights. Different if I've built a split new tactic mid-season, which is common in a new iteration of the game, then I'll want to watch it a bit to ensure its doing what its supposed to be doing.

I suppose I come across as a control freak, but the thing about FM is there are a lot of different ways to play the game. I'm an old LLAMA, so I don't sign players my scouts haven't discovered, so no just going out grabbing that Argentinian wonderkid you know scores 40+ a season and can be had for 50k. This means I'm usually playing with inferior players to the opponent, so the tactical side is much more important, as is acquiring and moulding players with very specific attributes to suit very specific roles. Better players obviously make a huge difference in terms of improving results, but when it's barebones stuff and difficult to improve the squad, something as simple as having a midfield 3 who are a bit too flat can cost you a ton of points and mean the difference between 6th and promotion.

Fair enough, I'd find it hellish spending 7 hours watching games at the start of the season but I suppose the glory of the game is you can play it numerous ways. I watch key highlights only

I tend to start one save on a new FM release, and then play it through until I buy another version of FM. Very rarely get further into the game than 10-15 seasons, and sometimes that is after 18months to 2 years of on/off playing.

I've never seen the attraction of just grabbing Barcelona, zipping through about 100 seasons in a month of real time,  obliterating everything, and then deciding you need a "challenge" so starting over with Man City, but that's how a lot of folk seem to play FM, and that's entirely up to them 🤷‍♂️

Oh, and full 90 minute matches don't actually last 90 minutes real time. A half is usually 10-15 minutes real time, maybe 20 if there are a lot of stoppages.

Personally, I have watched 90 minutes of all my team's matches (even friendlies) since the introduced of the match engine (CM4, with the little counters).

Is it time consuming? Definitely. But it adds realism. Real managers don't take trips in their time machine during matches.

But saying that, I haven't been an avid player since FM2012. (I've played it since the first Championship Manchester on the Amiga) and totally gave it up when they brought in the DRM that made it impossible to... you know.

Taking out international football is crazy. My last FM career was when I was joint manager of East Fife (SPL) and Scotland u19s.

I might still have the box for Championship Manager laying around. I definitely still have the Amiga 600.
