I wouldn’t be sure of that. A lot of the negative impact and objection to the football stadium was in Tooting, Sadiq Khan’s former constituency, it was well known that Sadiq is much less likely to approve than Boris. You are right that it was posturing from Boris, he wanted to hand the decision to someone else. It may still be approved but it’s much less likely to be approved under the current mayor than either the former mayor or at a LA level. The comment about greyhound racing as a sport isn’t even worthy of a response.

Just revisiting this as Sadiq Khan did indeed do the right thing and pass the planning decision for the Wimbledon Greyhound stadium back to Merton Council and a failed appeal to the Communities and Local Government Minister, Sajid Javid by Wandsworth Council now means that the new stadium for AFC Wimbledon is all systems go with the site being cleared next Spring and AFC Wimbledon due to return home for the start of the 2019/20 season. It would have been earlier but for buffoon, Boris Johnson who has cost us a 12 month delay and increased costs of approximately £1M.

What were the extra £1m costs - lawyers? Has that sum come from current or recent expenditure or is it future costs?

I can't understand why Boris Johnson called it in. There must have been intensive lobbying from opponents to the scheme or the club, e.g. other developers.

The majority of the extra expenditure is due to the increase in construction costs and associated costs involved with fighting the case when the then London mayor, Boris Johnson called in the scheme.

Boris Johnson basically called it in against the advice of his own planners in the London Mayoral office as a favour and under pressure from the Wandsworth Tories who have always fought this development. Ergo, it was a political decision as opposed to a planning or common sense decision.

There was no opposition to the old Wimbledon, aka MK Dons, playing in the top flight at Plough Lane.
