Right, whenever im on the net and try to click on a link my internet stops responding. Its only links that involve a new window opening and it also happens whenever i go on to a sitre that has ad pop-ups, its really bloody annoying. Anyone have any idea what virus I have or how to solve the problem.

James........no a techno when it comes to PC/virus.There`s a new virus variant causing havoc worldwide that doesn`t come via email but just by connecting to the net.Not for one minute saying you have it.

What windows version are you using?Do you have a firewall installed?

Try these steps in order and retry after each one;

1) Clear out all your temporary internet files, cookies and history. Asuming you are using internet explorer do this through tools, internet options. Settings are in the middle pane that opens.

2) Download and Run Search and Destroy - see link on the other virus thread about this. Fix any problems it finds on your machine.

3) Run Windows Update and ensure your computer is up to date, particularly with the latest Internet Explorer patches and updates

Ta for the info. Have done all of that but problem is sort of still there!! The new windows and pop ups now appear if I right click the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. If I dont do it quick enough Internet Explorer stops responding. Im perplexed! :blink:

Pieman- wont clearing the temp internet files and cookies get rip of registerings for message boards etc?

No - cookies only store your login details temporarily to "auto" log you in when you visit them. Like P&B for example B)

If you delete them then you do need to login again when you visit a site, but the cookie is then recreated again.

It is good housekeeping to ditch them every now and then as some sites store cookies that you don't know about :unsure:

What about Temp Internet Files? What do they store?

Your computer stores images everytime you visit a website. It keeps them locally on your computer (called "cache") and it does this so that when you next visit the site it only downloads content that has changed (makes it all much faster).

For example - the P&B forum logo - it doesn't change - so your computer never needs to download it again as it is stored locally.

If you delete all your temp internet files you will initially notice that sites you access will be a wee bit slower on first access - as alll the common images will download again - but you'll also rid yourself of all the shite that is on your machine.

I clear my cache every week :) Keeps the doctor away :lol:

Try this;

Tools, Internet Options, Advanced

Go to the browsing section and uncheck "Enable third party browser extensions"

You might need to restart after this change.
