Floppy Disks

Recommended Posts

I need some help.

Before I go this new PC in january I put some of my pics and stuff onto a floppy disks, but I can't get one to open because it seems to be unformatted, and for it to be usable I have to formatt it and hence lose the date which is on it as this PC will only take formatted disks.

So is there anyway I can open this disk (the contents of it are starting to bug me) without erasing what is already saved onto it?

Thanks

The disk is probably corrupted then MC. Always keep a backup of your files. :(

I've had a dig around though and found this recovery program. It's a 3.6Mb download.

Maybe try these other options first?

1. Reading the disks in PC's with Windows 95 or 98 installed.

2. Turn off anti-virus software.

3. Try "check disk" and see if it finds any errors - My Computer / right-click 'A' drive / properties / tools / check now).

4. Reading the disk from a DOS prompt - Start button / Run / type cmd and press return / type dir a: (doubt this will make any difference but worth a shot).

5. Start in "Safe-mode". Press F8 (or F5 ?) while PC starts. Really clutching at straws now!

6. A very advanced option if none of this works is here where it says workaround.

Thanks for the help RWB. I might just do the easier thing and hook up my old PC which worked on Win 98.

I had that problem as well. Does the disk takes ages to attempt to load up? Mine did that when I was taking essays and reports back home. You are just going to have to lose the data unless that programme above works.

Floppy disks are utter pants.

Get a USB pen disk for £20-£30 - a 128Mb key holds about 88 floppies worth.

Shove it in your machine and it appears as just another drive - brilliant for backups, and it is smaller than a really tiny thing.

Beat me to it Pieman, i have a 128meg flashdisk (thats pretty small by latest technology) and its so small you don't even know you are carrying it, its stores shitloads as pieman says and it doesnt go losing or corrupting data like a Floppy. I mean come on, 1.2mb??????? Was fine 10 years ago not anymore,

PC's nowadays are being built with no floppy drives, you have to pay a little extra for it, i dont't have one and don't need one, , they are on their way out fast,

Get with the times dudes. :P

Mine did that when I was taking essays and reports back home

A floppy and a back up on the uni did me ok for my first 2 years, as soon as i went past that reports got bigger with pictures and graphs in them, a floppy just isn't big enough anymore

Yeah I've noticed that to. I just use CD's now as most of the Uni computers come with CD burners. Great in conjunction with 8mb/s downloads for music off WinMX!

I hooked up my old PC this morning and retrieved the stuff which was on the disk, and then put it onto a formatted dick which works in this PC - so I am mega chuffed, and it only took a matter of seconds to do, as all I had to move was 2 cables.

I have all but bought one of those things Pieman, have you any preferences on what the best would be to buy?

I have the 256Mb version of the Crucial Gizmo - it's tiny, reliable, and fast as it's USB 2.0.

128Mb version is available next day from dabs for £22.56 +shipping;
