ICTChris
Was going to do a run along the Union canal towpath today but still have a sore back from playing squash for the first time in a month so am going to wait until the weekend to run again. My run home after nightshifts is 5 miles or so from Canonmills to Slateford (ish).
Munter
Amazed at how mild December and January have been. Out last night for a 10km with sprints and it felt like spring time! Strength and speed coming back to pre-illness levels slowly. Cut another 2 mins off my recent 10km time, so only another 3 mins to go. Planning a long run tomorrow with hills at the end so will see how that goes. Will be signing up for the Loch Ness marathon this week so no going back after that!!
tintax
I have been keeping myself fit for a year and a bit now by going to the gym and cycling. Over the Christmas period however my gym was closed so i took the decision to start going out running, had never done it before but wish i had done ages ago really enjoying it more so than going to the gym actually. Am only starting with small 3 to 5 k's to get my joints used to the change from the tradmill can definetly feel it more in the shins.
Cardinal Richelieu
Had my visit to the podiatrist and got my £130 bits of plastic. It's almost like wearing high heels, as it raises my heels a good half an inch and feels distinctly odd but I think it's helping. Unfo, he didn't tell me to bring along my trainers so he guessed the size of them based on the shoes I was wearing (he guessed they'd be slightly bigger). So this means I either need to wait for 2 weeks for him to fix it, or go and buy a bigger pair of running shoes.
BishyTON
Back to work today so first gym session in nearly 3 weeks! Cardio weights and treadmill sprints killed me so much more than usual after break lol! BTW Garrowhillclyde - do you know if treadmill runs count towards Jantastic? I assumed not in my estimations and put down 3 runs a week, but it would be 6 runs per week if treadmill was included.
Stellaboz
Is it normal to have a sore chest the day after a long run? If I breath in to a certain point, or yawn, there's a small painful area in the middle of my chest. Is this because I've not been breathing enough or possibly overworked my lungs?

Where you running into a cold wind? Sometimes I find that can lead to chest pain due to breathing in cold air very quickly and irritating the lungs.

I would say yes Bishy, I have a crosstrainer at home that I would count if it got too snowy or icy, etc to run outside, so if a crosstrainer is ok, then a treadmill is too.
RH33
Would appreciate feedback. Was talking to Reina earlier too. Last two runs my pacing has been off and just haven't been in right frame of mind. I've riaisrd way more money than I expected for SAMH and I'm bit scared of pre Saturday injury. So do I try again tomorrow and try and get a final 5k under belt or do I just leave it?

Yeah they definitely are - I asked on FB as well as in here and they confirmed that treadmill runs count. My 3 per week for January is now pathetically easy lol - will need to set a far tougher target for next month.

If you can do your run early doors tomorrow then I would go for it. If not then best just to rest up IMO. Well done on the fundraising and on turning your life around. It is inspirational to see how well you are dealing with the difficulties you face.

What you're doing is helping others, regardless of pace (or even whether you finish at all). More importantly it's helping you, just by going out - not by going fast. Your pace will be fine in-race anyway, it's very difficult to emulate how you'll be on the day in training. Edited for bad grammarrarrarrrarr. So do I try again tomorrow and try and get a final 5k under belt or do I just leave it? Don't do 5k. Like a few others have said maybe go out and do a little bit of slow running for maybe 10 minutes. You are not going to get any fitter between now and Saturday but a short run might calm your nerves and it just keeps the legs moving. Try not to worry about Saturday, you have already done 5k in training and it'll be a lot easier to do it at an organized event.
RH33
Thanks guys. Think I'll just leave it as I'll be more anxious if I don't do a Pb 5k tomorrow! Thanks for your encouragement, has helped keep me motivated.

Stellaboz
I got really good Nike Pegasus one's from Sports Direct for £70 back around September, absolutely love them. And no, I was on the treadmill on my long run, so no cold wind to impact my breathing. Maybe I've just over done it.
Munter
Itzdrk I would certainly recommend you get along to run 4it or another proper running shop and get fitted correctly if you're running regularly. I did this when I started and found I over pronate badly. Getting good fitting trainers and a pair of super feet inserts has worked wonders - no injuries in 3 years! Both run4it and sweatshop have pretty good sales on at the moment. You probably want to spend about £100 but could get something good for half that right now. Sweatshop have 50% off on Adidas for example and the mizunos I swear by are down to £65 from £125 in run 4 it. Worth mentioning most folks recommend you change trainers after about 500 miles. Hope that helps Edited January 8, 2014 by Munter

I know when I do a long run sometimes my form begins to suffer towards the end and I get a pain across my back and shoulders. Might be something like this Nice morning for a run cold but not frosty - easy 6.5kms was a nice way to start the day

I go for ascis 1100 range and usually pick up the last years version for £50 to £70 online. I have 3 pairs at the moment - one pair just about done, one pair broken in and a 3rd pair still in the box.

I am similar, i use the saucony omni and always have a look online to see if they are going at a bargin price. As i am a size 14, any reductions tend to be a bonus.
