I've got a mate who has just left to go on a 9,000 mile cycling tour of west coast USA and Canada.  He reckons it'll take six months, but he only went three miles on his first day as opposed to the 20 he had planned.  I'm actually amazed he got a visa to do it, knowing the DHS,  but he did.  I guess there are cycling agencies who have a good reputation for dealing with these things.

Cracking run today.

2500 feet of climbing in 50 miles. Planning to ramp up the miles now the weathers hopefully turned.

Excellent, hopefully the weather is going to be good this summer as I’m wanting to get out on the hills and make record climbs this year. I was out briefly yesterday but really felt the benefit of the gym work on the short, sharp climbs.

Got out for 39 miles miles today without about 1900ft of ascent. Slight improvement in pace to 14mph. Quite surprised with today as my legs were still gubbed from walking the Tarmachan Ridge yesterday.

Tomorrow and Tuesday look decent weatherwise as well....

Is he going up and down a couple of times or just meandering about? You'd think to keep you motivated for 9000 miles you'd want clear goal, like John O'Groats to Landsend.

I believe he's following a sort of pirate's map, through the national parks and what not.  But I also think he's a little insane, so who knows.

Good 42 miler on my own today.

When I'm riding on my own, I virtually never have any issues with irrate drivers, but usually have several issues every time I ride in a group.

Is it the same for other riders?  Is it riding 2 abreast that drivers have an issue with?

A motorist can mostly easily overtake a single cyclist so you don't get much hassle but groups of cyclists slow them down so they get pissed off crawling behind them. human nature really.

Of course you have the nutters who just hate all cyclists.

Two abreast means that they pass groups quicker tho.

Do these angry drivers also get angry with tractors, road sweepers and other slower vehicles?

Two abreast means they can't pass in oncoming traffic. Tractors etc. are considerate enough to pull over occasionally to let traffic through.

I've passed plenty of cyclists riding two abreast Welshy and never had any problems doing so.

Most well organised groups know how to behave around traffic. Grant you get the occasional muppets who refuse to let anything past, but in my experience on both sides of the coin this is pretty rare. The group I occasionally go out with will ride two abreast, but slot into single file to let cars past on the narrower roads when's it's safe to do so. I've encountered far more arsehole, inconsiderate drivers when in the car than cyclists, even allowing for the respective numbers.

Unless the road is wide, cars can't (or shouldn't attempt to) pass even single file cyclists with traffic coming the opposite direction.

Yesterday at one point I had 7 or 8 cars behind me on a twisty section.  When they got past at a straight section, none of them showed any sign of frustration.  If I'd been in a group I'm sure there would have been beeping, revving and abuse galore.

I think a lot of drivers just don't realise cyclists are allowed to ride 2 abreast or in a group.

never ride more than two abreast, and ride in single file on narrow or busy roads and when riding round bends

I wonder how many drivers tend to give horse riders as hard a time after all these are larger and generally slower objects on the road. Thankfully I haven’t had any issues recently on the road, I try to be courteous to other road users as it’s just easier for everyone to get along and go to wherever they need to be.

Two weeks to Etape Loch Ness, is everyone’s preparations going to plan?

My response:

I had intended to try to knock 30 mins off last years time, but i'll be lucky to even equal it.

Done a 43, 49 and 39 mile ride over the previous three weekends and planned on going out this morning, but was absolutely smashed after a hillwalk yesterday and could barely get out of bed.

I'm heading up Saturday morning and staying near Beauly. Hoping to do some hills the day after the Etape, depending on how crumpled I am after it.
