Zander is a massive loss for Glasgow as he is by far the best tighthead we have but for Scotland I still think WP is far better than him at the moment particarly in the scrum. Berghan isn't a bad backup to have either.

WP Nel, when fit, very rarely gets beaten at his side of the scrum. It’s the “when fit” part which bothers me.

Big fan of that guy.

Glasgow & Scotland await news on Stuart Hogg's ankle scan. Hopefully its nothing too serious.

Whilst the article concentrates on Hoggy, it does mention a wee bit about Zander. He's got a lower leg fracture in the ankle area, which may see him out for months rather than weeks.

Not sure I see that as being as much of a blow as others do.

He's a big unit, but he's a penalty machine that's made of glass.

Yeah, I never rated him that highly either. He became a bit of a cult hero through being big and scary looking, but he's hardly played and like you say, gave up far too many penalties.

We do need somebody to replace him though. We still lack a bit of grunt in the forwards. If only big Leone would come back....

He has played 22 games for Glasgow(according to his Warriors page) in 2 years (only 6 of them last season). So he will be easy to replace. But Toulon will just take one look at the amount of time he is out injured and go for someone else.

Glasgow are treading on thin ice with the forwards. If Gray gets injured they are fucked (Cummings and Harley vs Itoje and Skelton!). Fraser Brown being fit is huge, if he goes down again it means Grant Stewart in Europe. The backrow lacks grunt and that will show much more without Zander's work rate. Matt Fagerson and Matt Smith are both undersized and far from the finished article. Chris Fusaro is even smaller.

Giving away a massive lump isn't a good idea.

A massive lump who never really plays though. I agree though, our pack is weak, and that was apparent last season when the big teams steamrollered us so it's very disappointing nothing has really been done about it. We've never replaced Nakawara or Strauss. Even Reid gave us a bit of grunt. It just feels like it's going to go the same way as last season when we were capable of blowing away the shit and reserve teams, but when it came to the real big matches we just got overpowered.

Toulon have only won one out of their first four games - utter mince by their standards. There might be an air of desperation, which would explain why they'd consider taking a punt on the big chap.

Anyway, if those funds could be used to bring back Leone then everyone's a winner.

Big Brian's not the Messiah, he's just a very naughty boy.

I might be in the minority here, but he looked the part but didn't really offer the same grunt that the likes of Jonny Gray and Swinno offer.  Even Scott Cummings breaking through just now looks to be a stalwart.

Not only that, but he was perennially injured, a bit like Sarto.  Therefore I think it'll free up the wage bill.

All the best to him if/when he goes though.

Was he not just out of favour when Rennie arrived rather than injured? Possibly to do with his silly bulking down idea?

I'm not holding him out as a potential Nakarawa type hidden gem I just think in general terms a squad that is light on locks and ball carriers shouldn't let a ball carrying lock leave midseason.

He was long-term injured though Kiran McDonald was breaking through, Swinno found his form before injury, Jonny Gray and Scott Cummings are there with Rob Harley able to play 2nd row too. So I feel personally that there's better players there keeping him out.

Hogg is apparently out injured for 6-8 weeks after surgery. No Champions Cup in October, No AIs.

That's not good news. However fingers crossed he manages the home games in the autumn tests though just in case Blair Kinghorn is proving to be a find at 15.

Very disappointing that Hoggy's out of Europe though Jacko did a great job at 15 when Hoggy was out injured last season. I'm hoping we'll have the artillery for the Southern Kings, the Dragons and Zebre game first though.
