I'll go for Raith, a League One club who were elected to play in the Championship.

Obviously don’t want to see any team fold due to this plague but I’m sure my grief would be fairly short lived if it happened to last season’s Division 1 “Champions”.

On a football related note, I see Josh McPake, who was mentioned as a potential target for us has signed for Morton on loan.

Regarding the club going bust loan, Raith Rovers went to their fans with the begging bowl very early in the current situation so must be in a really precarious position already.

Our owner announced at the weekend we will post over £100k profit for the last year. That is for the period before we received £150k for Bowie or started selling season tickets and kits.

Unsure whether the £100k raised by the fans is included or not but our ex chairman confirmed this money hadn’t been fully spent yet (due to the furlough scheme being utilised) and would be set aside for the challenges that are likely to face all clubs in the season ahead.

Our owner also confirmed we will be in a position to see out the season regardless of whether fans are allowed in at any point. Obviously no guarantees but I’d say we are far from the most vulnerable.

On loan signings, that's probably more a case of mcglynn bugging the board for more cash on top of external funding rather than him keeping money back specifically for that.

I think that was the case with Steven Anderson and Dan Armstrong. However, the plan was always to add a striker later in the summer when better quality became available. We were lucky with circumstances to get both Baird AND Gullan but the plan was always to add the right loan player when they became available.

to be fair, it's a sizeable gamble. It's not like we've got a surplus of good options in positions that we can use if these guys turn out shite. If Masonda isn't up to it, we are left with two half decent centre backs, if Duku and Ugwu are shite, we have Jack Smith, Lewis Vaughan and at an absolute pinch, Grant Anderson. We all know Vaughan has the ability to build a team around him,  but there are huge doubts about him being able to stay fit.

We could end up making some fairly rapid, panicky forays into the loan market.

I agree the English signings are gambles and I’m not overly confident they will pay off. Our options at centre back and up front look weak or at best unproven.

However, McGlynn usually tends to keep a portion of his budget up his sleeve for when the season has started. Allowing him to pick up some loans that maybe wouldn’t have been available earlier in the market and once he has assessed the squad in competitive games to see where the weaknesses are.

It happened regularly in McGlynn’s first spell but even last year is a good example. We all had doubts with the side that started the league season but before the first quarter was out we had added Steven Anderson, Dan Armstrong, Jamie Gullan and John Baird.

If he doesn’t think the English lads are at the level he hoped after the friendlies and League Cup games we will hopefully use the loan market to add a couple. Some of our youngsters that aren’t quite ready may go out on loan to make room and get game time. Ideally a central defender, left winger and striker although that may be pushing it but when have we ever seen a John McGlynn side without at least a couple of loans!

  4. Did Sim say we made a profit of over £100,000 in the latest accounts!? Just want to make sure I heard that right.

Excellent news if so. Obviously next year will be much more challenging and where the true effects of Covid will be felt but also encouraging to hear him say that we will survive this season even if fans aren’t allowed in.

Can't believe we're actually playing Raith in a friendly. I would not entertain these a*******s after their antics earlier this year. Their desperation for promotion followed by their lying we scrote of an exe chairman should've seen us steer well clear of them. I wouldn't trust them to turn up for this FFS.

    Things you love to see.

    Paul Currie

Could probably have made a team just from Gary Locke’s signings or McGlynn’s loans during his first spell.

Honourable mentions to Robbie Crawford, Ludo Roy, Darren Petrie, Ryan Wallace and Niall Henderson.

This weeks Rovers Review saying that we'll be looking at the loan market once the season starts. Also says that we're focusing on getting the south and north stands improved and that railway stand development is on the back burner.

‘Indications’ that arbitration costs are being awarded against Hearts/Partick also.

It boils down to this. If these guys were investing in our wee cousins 15 miles along the A92 they'd be all over it like a rash.

You are correct but I can guarantee there would be Pars fans all over our thread saying the same things as some Rovers fans.

The truth is, nobody knows how it will work out. There is always suspicion when foreign investors come in Scottish football, particularly the lower leagues where there have been very few success stories.

However, all takeovers are the same, fans of the team being taken over see it as all sunshine and rainbows and won’t have a bad word said, everyone else is ‘jealous.’ Opposition fans come in predicting the worst and forecasting oblivion but absolutely nobody knows. It is not a Raith Rovers/Dunfermline thing, it happens with everyone.

  9. I imagine the last 4/5 months will have seriously taken its toll on him. He stated on one of the BBC podcasts he would have swapped places with Falkirk if he had known the fall out that would have followed.

Now whilst that is obviously an exaggeration for effect I think it highlights how much it has taken out of him. He’s done a very good job on the whole and will be a big loss but I’m hopeful it’s just a personal decision by him rather than anything deeper to cause greater concern regarding the club.

  10. His scoring record for a dreadful Pars side looks decent but I do remember them not particularly rating him at the time.

He’s played at a respectable enough level done south and done okay but definitely another gamble. I wish we had at least one known quantity in the striking positions. I don’t think we have anyone in the squad that could guarantee us 10 league goals over a 27 game season so unless there is a loan signing coming in it looks like we will be reliant on everyone contributing with a steady number of goals all over the team again.

Tbf we managed it last season so got to trust McGlynn will get it right again. He likes powerful strikers to hold the ball up for the likes of Vaughan/Armstrong/Hendry etc to play off. Similar to Allan and MacLean last season so at least he is signing the right type of players for our style.

  11. Always interesting to have a couple of unknown quantities who could turn out to be brilliant or hopeless. Duku definitely seems worth a punt given we have another striker still to come in who will hopefully be more proven.

However, I was hoping we’d have gone for a more known quantity at centre back. Given we now have 4 centre backs, if this guy ends up a dud similar to Mendy (so far) then 36 year old Iain Davidson will be part of our first choice partnership for the full season. With two very questionable options as back up.

However, JM doesn’t get many wrong so have to trust his judgement and hope this guy is a hidden gem. I wasn’t overly excited by our recruitment last summer (Hendry aside obviously) and that worked out okay, albeit with a few key signings after the season started.

Winger (McPake?) and a striker and I think that’s us done. A week before pre season starts that’s pretty encouraging.

He’s a goal machine at that level. His record at any decent level is not so encouraging... Got to trust JM’s judgement though I suppose. 6 foot plus so suits his preference for a physical hold up player in the striking role.

I guess he is also the Ghanaian striker that was spoken about.

  13. Another year with a long term injury. There has not been a single game McGlynn has had a fully fit squad to choose from since he came back. That’ll be over 100 games by the end of this season.

It’s a blow for us but an even bigger one for McKay. Looked like he had an opportunity to establish himself as the first choice partner for Bene at centre back and it could have been a real breakthrough season for him. Rotten luck.

These dumb fucks don't realise we've had three years worth of a dozen fans from Stranraer and Peterhead. We've managed before without them and we'll continue to manage without them. Genuinely incredible how many suffer delusions of grandeur.

This. We have managed with one man and their dog supports for 3 seasons, we’ll be fine. I’d be surprised if everything was back to normal crowd wise this side of new year anyway so we are effectively missing out on one home gate against them.

Also, they have been shouting from the roof tops about this boycott for months which will mean we will budget accordingly. If the boycott happens and nobody turns up it won’t have a disastrous effect as it will have been expected and accounted for in the budget. If they abandon the idea (as I expect) then it will be an unforecasted cash boost for us on the last day.

Jamie McDonald good signing but with Davo in front of him when he actually stays on the pitch, moaning at everyone round him then he may a tough season. Hopefully a new centre half comes in.

If budgets are tight then no room for McGurn ad much as I like him, he is past it and struggles with injuries and Davidson no thanks. Hasn't got the legs anymore and his temperament is shocking and probably even worse now that it was 10 years ago.

In terms of Davidson being the best defender with the ball at his feet, sorry but no. Both fullbacks are better. Davidson's usual pass is a hook over his shoulder or a punt up the park. I just hope that we have plans to sign a central defender and Davidson is 3rd or 4th choice.

You may dislike Davo more than @Michael W , I didn’t think that would ever be possible. Fair play.

Mcglynn looking for a right back, a winger and 2 strikers.

    Mcglynn IN!

No centre back? I would like to change my previous stance and join the worriers. I assume we just aren’t signing a centre back until we move Mendy on. That’s all it is, right?

    ...right?

  17. Excellent signing IMO. One I hoped we’d make given he was available and McGlynn worked with him at Hearts but thought he’d have better offers.

Hopefully settles down a few of the worriers from yesterday that we would be going with the same defence/keeper. MacDonald in to replace Munro. I’d imagine we’ll still have a centre half to replace Anderson and a right back to replace Miller at some point too.

Good start to our summer business.

  18. People need to remember we need a squad of players. Remember when we had 8 or 9 players out November/December time last year and still kept churning out results. We’d all love a squad 22 equally talented players but that’s not how it works at this level.

Happy JM has went with players he trusts. Even if we sign up every player who is out of contract (unlikely) that’ll still leave us 8 players down on last season so there is still scope to add the additional quality we require. Vaughan back available is already like a new signing (although given his injury record he can’t be relied upon for 27 games).

I honestly don’t think we need much to be a decent side at this level. A right back, a centre half, a couple of strikers, another winger and maybe a keeper and I think we look pretty strong. That’s 6 additions replacing 8 outgoings (And it’ll be more than that if Miller or Dingwall don’t re-sign) We have 12 weeks till our first competitive game to make those additions.

    Thomson/New Keeper

    New RB
    New CB
    Bene
    MacDonald

    Matthews
    Spencer
    Hendry

    Vaughan
    New Striker
    Armstrong

Looks a decent team to me and leaves McGurn, Davo, McKay, Anderson, Tait, Smith as well as the youngsters as back up along space for another couple of additions for depth.

If there are no new signings in the next 12 weeks then by all means panic but I think at the moment some people need to settle down. Consistency always plays a key part in McGlynn’s success, he took a team from 7th to title challengers by basically only adding John Baird and Willie Dyer IIRC. He knows what he’s doing.

  19. Over 400 games for the club and Davo still polarises opinion. He was very good after the East Fife debacle (aside from the couple of standard Davo red mist moments of stupidity) so I am happy with him being signed up again, I think it’s the right call. However, at 35 I’d hope it is as dependable back up with a new CB brought in beside Bene.

The fact they’ve announced two centre backs first makes me think they’re announcing them in order of position, does that suggest Thomson hasn’t been re-signed? Or am I reading far too much into it?
