  1. I live in decidedly middle-class Strathbungo, but Govanhill is a stone's throw away and I spend a fair bit of time there for various reasons, and I've got a fair bit of affection for the place. Govanhill has some serious, well-documented social problems, but I actually wonder if things are looking up for it a bit. A few decent shops, bars, cafes, etc have sprung up over the past couple of years - probably influenced by what's going on in the areas surrounding it but with comparatively very cheap rent. It's still treated like a dump by too many of its residents, and too many of the flats are owned by crap landlords who don't give a toss about the quality of the housing as long as the rent is coming in, but as people and businesses move in I'm hopeful that might change. There's a long way to go though. Edited to add: the thing about people loitering in the street is apparently much more of a cultural norm in some of the communities that have moved to Govanhill in recent years. I see it quite often but never encountered any trouble. Edited again to add: and it's within a short walk to plenty of good bars/cafes/parks/fancy shops/places people like spending time in, and a short ride on public transport away from anything Glasgow has to offer - more than can be said for some of the places named on this thread.
  2. I’ve been clearing out my dad’s loft and uncovered this, written by a 14 year old Adamski...
  3. Whenever this thread goes back up to the top it strikes me that it would make a good World Cup style competition: regional qualification rounds, a final 32, groups, knockout rounds, a final. P&B could really settle this once and for all. But I'm not doing it. Contenders for me include New Cumnock, Lesmahagow, and Methil. Methil probably shades it though.
  4. Corbyn going for the VONC in order to get the attempt at forcing a general election out the way? It’ll fail, but then Labour can say ‘we tried’ and move for a 2nd referendum. Perhaps?
  5. If she has resigned? It's probably nonsense though.
  6. More from the bookies... in the market for whether or not there will be a second referendum, 'Yes' has just taken oven as favourite in a couple of bookies. It was generally 3/1 a few days ago. Paddy Power (again) - Yes = 8/11, No = evens.
  7. Paddy Power have her 4/5 to win a VONC, evens to lose. My guess (and my record with these guesses is pretty honking) is a win, but not by enough to carry on.
  8. Bleurgh. That reminds me of a post I made on Facebook on the morning of 23rd June 2016. Farage, Johnson, etc, etc were the boys I had down as taking a hell of a beating. Minter. The result was probably all my fault.
  9. The party line from the EU is that such a deal is no longer on the table - it's either May's deal, no deal, or Remain. Whether in reality there's flexibility on that is another matter. Also a Norway deal would (probably) mean membership of the EEA, which could be problematic: would Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, accept a far larger fourth state working on similar terms to them? I don't have a link but there was an article in the Financial Times a few days ago that suggested they wouldn't.
  10. But as things stand there isn't any indication that the EU and EEA would agree to the UK having a Norway-type deal.
  11. In normal circumstances I'd be confident that you were correct. But over the course of this process there have been so many last-minute abstentions and changes of mind that I'm still in mind to believe it if/when it happens.
  12. As pointed out by Mike Smithson on Political Betting, that likely ECJ ruling might push a few pro-Brexit MPs towards supporting May’s deal if it increases the likelihood that the alternative is no Brexit.
  13. Liz Truss overheard in a restaurant discussing various bits and pieces of cabinet meetings and Brexit. Whoops!
  14. For me the problem with the proposed format of the debate isn't so much Scotland's representation, but representation of the views that Sturgeon and others hold in terms of Brexit. If there is going to be a debate then advocates of a 2nd referendum/stopping Brexit, as well as those in favour of a hard Brexit should be represented.
  15. If there was a second referendum and remain won I'd Kevin Keegan style love it, love it if the government properly trolled the gammons and went as zealous with remain as they've been going with leave over the past few years: Schengen, the Euro, the lot. (In reality, I'd be delighted with any sort of win and this farce was consigned to the dustbin.)
  16. The Acropolis is a must see. Try and go early to avoid the crowds. The Panathenaic Stadium is the site of the first modern Olympic Games. It was an unexpected highlight. Really photogenic too. Easy to find decent food - wee unassuming-looking backstreet places serving food that's a class above any Greek restaurant I've eaten at in Scotland. Also if you're travelling on the underground, keep a close eye on your stuff. We were warned about this before we went. On the first journey we went on a couple sitting opposite us (also tourists) had their wallet and phone stolen while they sat there.
  17. Sad thing is that if there was a general election the Tories would probably still win it.
  18. I do. When it comes to capitulation the pro-EU wing of the Tory party have history. Edit - and Labour have history of abstention.
  19. This from Freiburg v Mainz as well...
