  1. HMHB were fucking class tonight, though with the turnout tonight I think they might have managed two seperate nights.
Playing for 34 years. Most bands would be legacy 'greatest hits' performers by now. They played five tracks from their latest (14th) album tonight. Absolutely brilliant.
  2. Brechin and Elgin I can sort of understand, both fairly close and with Elgin they have some history in the HL. With Cowdenbeath they obviously have a history, but still a bit of an odd choice, I can't imagine there will be a lasting rivalry with them. But Edinburgh City???
The season we got promoted we beat Cove 3-0 in the play-off semi-final at Harlaw Park.
  3. I noticed that there was a few names missing from the squad list on the back of last night's programme.  Have we started to let go of players already?
No players released and no printing error.

We've been playing so many under-20s recently that I wanted to leave additional blank spaces, in case people still write down the correct teamlines in the programme.

I left out players who were unlikely to play again this season. To name just one, can you imagine us happily releasing Andy Black?
  4. CITY LOSE AGAIN  ON PENALTY KICKS. NO SURPRISE THERE THEN  ! SO HOW DID THEY MANAGE TO SCORE THE PENALTY KICK THAT RELEGATED SHIRE !:unsure2::whistle:huh:
We had a hoodoo in penalty shootouts, not individual penalties. Dougie Gair scored more than 20 successive penalties. If Shire had managed to hold out for extra time and pens you might have still been in the SPFL, at least until we played you the following year.
  5. Would today be Edinburgh City's best ever score in the SPFL?
First time we have ever been top of any division of the Scottish League, though, even for a day - and that includes all pre-War Division 2, post-War Division C and since we came back into the League in 2016.
  6. Anyone know the final score of our friendly earlier? We left at 3-0 to City.
Laird looked superb, Donaldson done Donaldson moments but played well, Allan Smith got two and Blair scored a penalty. Left about 10 minutes before the end
Final score 4-1 City. Chris Mitchell pulled one back in 82 minutes, Graham Taylor got the fourth in 86 minutes with a superb close-range side-foot after a nice cross from number 27 (still to be identified).

Personally, I go to the Raeburn bar in Stockbridge or the Stockbridge Tap (Real Ales) then trundle across the park towards AP; it’s a leisurely 20 minute walk. The Village bar is like drinking in a Travelodge and some of the other local bars are, ahem, best avoided IMO.

The Stockbridge Tap is my local and it is most excellent, although if you're a Tennents drinker you will be disappointed.  You'd have to walk bloody briskly to reach Ainslie Park in 20 minutes - nearer half an hour, especially if you are my age and/or have a bellyful of ale.  Luckily buses 24 and 29, from the other side of the road, take about ten minutes to get to the Crewe Toll roundabout, and the ground is not far from there.

Clark's Bar in Dundas Street is also worth a visit.  The 27 bus can be boarded just outside and stops close to the ground, as mentioned above.

  8. There was a misunderstanding that day LS - there have been a few of us talking with the Social Club committee and we want to ensure that there is no further breakdown in communication.  Supporters are always welcome at the Social Club.  I'll get back to you privately and give you further details of the discussions.

  9. There is a grass bank in one corner at Balmoorthat kids run about on but it is not used for standing to watch the game. The bank in the photo is outwith the ground behind a goal. The photo from Elgin looks like its been photo shopped or whatever they do with changing pictures be interested to hear if any Elgin fan thinks its genuine.
Tam hardly knows how to operate a mobile phone, never mind Photoshop.
  10. Many thanks for taking the time to write an honest reply. Agree that your income streams are likely to be on par with clubs like Berwick/Albion Rov/Cowdenbeath.
The reason I asked was, those clubs listed above couldn't compete with EC in terms of what they offered players this summer. Players now getting paid over 52 weeks and not 42 not helping any of us. You've signed 4 players which equates to 50% of our whole budget.
This wasn't a jealous post, I was just intrigued to see how this was being funded. Your directors/sponsors deserve huge praise for the big step forward you are taking, leaving other clubs well behind.
Right now Peterhead/Stirling/Clyde/EC are top four for me.
Thanks again, looking forward to our trips up there again next season.

Could be that our smaller outgoings on other expenses mean that we have a bit more to spend on the player budget, but it won't be that much more - although at our level a few thousand can be significant, and minimum wage will affect us less than some of the clubs further from the Central Belt.

I haven't been treasurer for a few years and I don't (need to) know what anyone gets now, but I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of our players earns more than our entire player budget when we were a Lowland League side.

A play-off position would be great, but to be honest I would be happy with a comfortable mid-table this season while we continue to consolidate in the SPFL.

Interesting fact - so far as I can tell, Edinburgh City have never been top of the table in any division of the Scottish League, even for a single day - and that goes for the pre-War Division 2 side and in post-War Division C. If we can get a good start to this season maybe I'll start to think that the consolidation might be starting.

Looking forward to our visits to yourselves again. All the best.

Out of interest EC fans, who is providing the financial support to the club?  Someone has to be investing between 60-80k per year for you to be paying these wages.

The finance comes from the same as many other clubs at this level - gate money, licensing money, Scottish Cup participation, etc.  We don't have any sugar daddy.  We do have the big advantage of being based in Edinburgh, which is more attractive to many Central Belt players than having to travel three times a week to far-flung places for training and matches, so we can (sometimes) offer them a lot less money; and we don't own our own ground, which despite all the advantages that has, can also be a financial millstone.

And we are fortunate enough to have a manager who works closely with the Board and knows how much money City have to spend, and doesn't demand that the directors push the boat out.  The last player City signed that we weren't sure we could afford was Joe Mbu :thumsup2 , but that worked out rather well.  And before James McDonaugh, Gary Jardine was also closely involved with the finance side of things, and making sure that he wasn't signing players who would drag us into debt.

Both James and Gary can/could get rather testy when the suggestion goes up that City are dripping with cash.  We ain't.  Unlike Tam and Tenkay, I do have a clue about the club's finances, and I can honestly say I'd be surprised if we had a bigger income than Cowdenbeath or Berwick Rangers.

  12. I am talking East of Scotland league were Spartans and Edinburgh Lowland League teams
The Lowland League started in 2014 - City were Lowland when they beat Talbot 2-1 in 2014. It can't be denied that the formation of the Lowland League severely weakened the ESL, but the East Seniors have been weakened before - when the Edinburgh & District League broke away in 1930, when they lost clubs during the War, when they were packed with reserve teams during the disastrous geographical sections in the 1960s, and they have always bounced back. Looks like the League is in the process of bouncing back again.
