Such a shite decision - sums up how Var is steadily ruining things. Offside was never meant to do this.

VAR is shite, but if it hadn't been in place the goal would have been disallowed anyway by the linesman's flag, no?

It's incredibly close and my opinion is when it's that close the benefit of the doubt should be given to the attacker, but it's hard to justify VAR overruling the linesman there under the current rules.

  2. No fucking about here please. Aside from the obvious reasons, I don't really trust Celtic or Rangers not to f**k up our (probable) Euro spot, so we need to make sure we're the team taking advantage if that happens.

Expecting it to be a struggle on the basis that most of our games this season have been and there haven't been many Championship/Premiership encounters where the latter has dished out a hiding so far.

It definitely isn't. It's a reasonable post. Clarke has said that our strikers are there to provide goals for the midfield. Shankland doesn't have that in his locker but could be good off the bench if we need a goal.

At international level it's fair to say that aspect of his game is unproven, but he certainly has it in his locker for Hearts. The through ball he played for Vargas the other night being the latest example.

Also, sincere question, does Brown have it in his locker? I thought he injected a bit of energy when he came on against France but he was very poor with his back to goal against Norway. I've not seen much of Luton, but does he not tend to play out wide or alongside a more traditional number 9 rather than leading the line?

I think you're coming from the point of view that Shankland 'should' be in the squad rather than looking at the reality of what Steve Clarke is likely to do or what he has done in the past even going back to Euro-2020. I think the evidence for him selecting Shankland ahead of Brown is quite light, but I'm not going to argue - if that's your view that's fine and we can see how it all plays out.

I accept history isn't always a good way to predict the future. History would have predicted Kelly over Clark and Cooper over McKenna which isn't how it played out. It's not my personal preference to have Brown over Shankland, I just think as things stand right now it's Brown's to lose.

I'm not going to argue that the evidence Shankland will be favoured is light. I won't be astonished whatever Clarke picks.

However, the evidence that it's still Brown's to lose is also pretty light, given:

    - Relative performances of two players in November;

    - Shankland's exceptional form since then;

    - Shankland was selected over Brown in September before losing his place in the next couple of squads after a poor run of form for Hearts. This suggests Clarke doesn't necessarily favour Brown for playing style reasons and will take form into account.

Seeing the St Johnstone handball penalty shout back. There have been penalties given for that.  The arm is not out quite as far as the Dundee player on Saturday, but pretty similar in style.  No consistency at all from refs on what is and isn't.

I think where it's right is that the refs decision isn't obviously wrong, but definitely seen ones like that given this season.

Thought it was the same as our penalty at Dens in that whatever call the ref made would have been stuck with. Take the breakand move on.

A deserved win overall. Not much in the game, but we looked the more likely side. The highlights err... highlighted that we were much more dangerous than St Johnstone were. Got away with one for the handball though.

I don't think it was that similar to the Dundee one. It hits Cochrane on the back of the elbow with his arm close to his body and his forearm pointed towards the goal. For the Dundee one, the body shape is similar, but he's rotated 90 degrees in a way that blocks more of the goal, and it actually hits his hand.

The Dundee one wasn't a penalty imo but last night's was nowhere near.

If I were to guess, I'd say Jacob Brown is ahead of Lawrence Shankland at the moment for whatever reason that might be. The available historical selections point toward this based on the number of times Brown has been selected ahead of Shankland in the 23-man Matchday squads.

Recently, ahead of Georgia v Scotland, John Carver said the following about Shankland after Che Adams withdrew through injury.

    https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/john-carver-scotlands-zander-clark-223000029.html?guccounter=1&guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEwDJiI50hkATl7qphXORLD5Z1_TtqTeQU-Eew_Np8nBMQ42-23K6hYKn3LV_tHHqXo1j4cF9Xg0MMsnMmZvtveOKjvb_T8jKt-xGjoHxKMupRFtHpWud9za-31Zn4d6guLTF2cN8zCBa6YmzsUhho2O42t8LFPQXyMO12qewskE

Given Jacob Brown was selected on the original announcement for the Nov-2023 camp then you could interpret that as Brown being ahead of Shankland on the list at that time and also that Shankland is ahead of Nisbet who wasn't involved.

There's a lot of water under the bridge since that squad was announced though:

    - Shankland got a chance off the bench v Georgia and scored.

    - Brown got a chance from the start v Norway and was very poor.

    - Shankland has gone from 3 league goals to 17, most of them brilliant finishes and solo goals.  He's taken his game to another level this season, but that's mostly been evident since late October or thereabouts.

I certainly think Shankland is a better player than I did 3 months ago, while Brown (admittedly on limited evidence) probably went down in my estimation by following up a promising cameo v France with a poor showing v Norway. Clarke is very clamour-proof, so who knows, but I wouldn't be surprised if his opinions had also evolved since then.

I imagine both will get chances in the March friendlies.

30 seconds into this, the defender attempting to block the shot clatters Rashford after he hits it.

Penalty correctly given, because a player successfully hitting a shot before you slide right through them obviously doesn't mean you're entitled to do so, in exactly the same way as a player successfully completing a pass anywhere else on the park doesn't mean you can slide right through them. It is a clear foul.

A similar one at 1:25 in this too, FIndlay catches the Aberdeen player late after he has already crossed the ball.

Also Gilmour v Israel (2:15), although the challenge is a bit closer to the shot.

Agreed. I reckon three wins would probably get us third.

Fortunately, we've got as good a shot at the cup as anyone else. No reason for us to be worried about playing anyone.

    Exciting times.

You're right, although I am slightly worried about playing Airdrie.

Safely through on Sunday and a home tie v Inverness in the quarters would do nicely.

  9. Feel like we might lose this. More because we're probably due one than anything else.

Strange to be saying this at this point in the season given how well things are going, but I'm still not sure what our best formation or starting XI is.

Rowles and Atkinson won't be involved apparently. The former in particular has been missed recently. Thankfully Kingsley and Halkett are probably back so we won't have to play Sibbick.

Not sure about either of those tbh. We shat the bed at Pittodrie, but we were never wildly second best. And Rangers goal came out of nothing - I thought the game had 0-0 written all over it until then.

The OP said we were robbed in those games. I think the better team won on both occasions, even if the scores were marginal.

Likewise, a lot of games we've won have been marginal, but we've usually been the better team over the 90 minutes. I'd say Saturday was an exception to that.

His track record has some very good things on it bit he's far from being someone who's been good everywhere.  Leeds and Boro in particular were both dreadful spells for him and he's always thrived on being the underdog,wl which as much as i don't like Aberdeen, will rarely be the case for him in his remaining fixtures.  He can't really sit in and try to hit on the break at home to Ross County.

Should be a laugh, though he's a massive tory so hopefully it's a disaster

Maybe someone else said he's been good everywhere he's been, but I just said he's delivered results in the short term. I'm sure there are exceptions to that, but even at Middlesbrough he was appointed when they were right in relegation bother near the end of the season and got them fairly comfortably safe. I assume Aberdeen are just looking for a similar short-term boost.

Maybe he won't be a good fit for them or he won't adapt to the league or whatever. Hopefully not.

  12. It is box office, but I think it's also an annoyingly sensible appointment. He's proven just about everywhere he's been (albeit usually in the English Championship) that he can deliver results in the short term and he's the right sort of personality to lift the mood around the club.

If he can get them into Europe then they'll also be on a stronger footing to bring a new manager in in the summer than they are now.

If you had been unbeaten over that period fair enough but that’s a bit of a stretch.

Nobody is unbeaten in the same period and we've taken more points than Celtic, so it's not really a stretch at all.

To repeat before someone takes it out of context, the point is we are not that good and won't sustain that over the course of a season.

  14. 7 minutes ago, DaveMackay56 said:

Disagree. I was at Pittodrie.  In the first we were easily the better side, in the second half Aberdeen went direct and we didn’t react.

Tynecastle against rangers - rangers did nothing until the break away goal. Before the goal we were the better side and had the better chances.

Ross county at home was a complete robbery. Should have had 2 penalties instead we received a red card for Forest.

ps. I’m not arguing that we are or would be title contenders as I don’t believe that.  I’m stating that our form over the past 15 games is title contending form.  Which it is clearly

My statement was also that the last 15 games was title contention form. The point was that it's unsustainable and that's fine. Some people have been acting like we're on the verge of collapse because we're not winning comfortably every week.

Still, we weren't robbed in those games. Aberdeen and Rangers created more than us over the 90 minutes and deserved to win. County you can argue because of the penalty decision, but a draw was fair in that game. Likewise, a few of our wins could easily have been draws or worse (such as yesterday).

People tend to reframe all previous results based on the current mood. Trying to be as objective as possible, I think we're about where we should be or, if anything, a few points better off.

  15. Just now, DaveMackay56 said:

If we hadn’t started the season poorly we’d be in the mix.  Since game week 10 we’ve taken 3 points less than rangers and 2 more than Celtic.  The only points we’ve dropped have been a robbery

We were well beaten at home to Rangers and at Pittodrie, even if it was only by a goal.

Our form over the last 15 games or so illustrates that the more pessimistic fans over the last few weeks are partly right. We aren't good enough to keep up these results over the course of a season, but that's not because we're not 3rd best, it's because we're not title contenders. Results will regress a bit at some point, but that's fine.

I think going back two seasons to counter my argument is a bit of a stretch.

Also to Darren’s point, you’ll know better than me on this, but how many of Shankland’s goals are created by a crucial assist? When I think of his goals I think of many of them being wondergoals out of nothing or self made goals (like todays two for example).

Anyway, it’s only my opinion lads. I’m not stating it as a fact. I might be wrong and I guess unless Shankland was to get a long term injury (which I hope from a Scotland perspective he doesn’t) then we’ll never know which of us is right.

It's not really a stretch since the core of the squad has basically been the same since then with the exception of Shankland. Arguably this team is closer to 21/22 considering the horrendous injuries we had last season.

Obviously Shankland is our most crucial player which is why we were never going to sell him last month without a huge fee and a couple of replacements lined up. They wouldn't have been as prolific as him, but you'd hope they'd have been able to get us within single figures of Killie's points tally over 15 games.

Aberdeen this season are also proof that having an exceptional striker isn't enough in itself.

Motherwell, Hibs, Aberdeen, Livingston and Ross County will all be saying this is their worst team in decades. Even the much lauded St Mirren, Killie and Hearts don't actually worry you when playing them, same with the OF. Given how bad we are, even small improvements are enough to start climbing the league because it's that bad.

Hibs and Aberdeen have had plenty similar or worse teams over the last couple of decades and Livingston were lower league strugglers only a few years ago. The standard of the league is shite but it has been for ages.

Watching Levein's most recent Hearts team was soul-destroying aside from a couple of months in 2018. Some of the most clueless, boring football I've seen, so I'm not surprised it's a hard watch for you guys.

That penalty would be up there as one of the worst decisions of the season pre-VAR, but now it feels like a weekly occurrence someone getting shafted by incompetent refs re-reffing games.

    VAR needs binned.

The penalty was immediately given by the referee rather than being a VAR intervention.

A complete nonsense of a decision, though.
