Reckon I've done my Achilles some damage. It's been sore for a week or so but hasn't stopped me running and usually clears up the following day only to return when I go back running.

Today it got a lot worse towards the end and is showing no intention of clearing up. Anyone got useful advice apart from the usual rest? Should it be iced or should it have heat put on it - never quite sure which is the right option!

If it's just a case of flared up tendinitis then eccentric heel drops are the way to go.  My Achilles gives me a bit of jip occasionally but is usually fine as long as I'm doing a few sets each day.  Massaging the tendon between your thumb and forefinger can help too provided it's not too painful.  Not sure I'd bother with ice unless there's swelling.

Started watching cycling documentaries on YouTube, including the famous "A Sunday in Helk" about the 1976 Paris-Roubaix. Decent one about the newish Motorola team doing Paris-Roubaix and IIRC Liege-Bastogne-Liege in 1991.

    Any other good recommendations?

The Armstrong lie and Icarus are worth a watch if you've not seen them and are in anyway interested in the doping scandals around cycling.

  3. I done Ballloch to Clydebank half marathon today.  I'd recommend it for anyone looking for a fast half time.  I ran 1:32:13 taking more than 5 minutes off my old PB.  5 out of the 6 others I knew running all got PBs too.  Flat course with a good chance of a tail wind and it's the DAAA championship race so quite a strong field.

  4. Seen Kosgei obliterated Radcliffes seemingly untouchable women's record (mixed race) in Chicago this afternoon.
That's some feat when you consider that that record had stood for over 15 years. She took a minute 20 off and the next fastest women's marathon over a minute 30 slower than that.

  5. Difficult to get your head round the pace he's running at...  2:50/km,  4:38/mile, 14:26/5km.

I think it might still be a good few years before we see it done in a race environment but its still a phenomenal run and he's undoubtedly accelerated the process.

I just can't be fucked at the minute. I want to go out and look forward to it but then I get out there and my running is shite only managing a couple miles and then feeling knackered and not able to push through it.

Any way to get out this funk?

Make sure you're doing some really easy stuff sometimes...  Go out without your watch or make a concerted effort not to pay attention to pace and just run to feel keeping it nice and comfortable.

Join a club.  Running with others can really help you to push yourself and gives you something to look forward to and a reason to get out the door.

  7. I keep stuff in work to get changed into.  I only commute on the bike a few times each week though so bring stuff in/take stuff home when I'm in the car.  I'll stick things in my backpack sometimes but it doesn't take much to be having to stuff things in if your carrying bike spares, food and wet weather gear for the bike.  Makes life a little easier to keep the weight down too.

What is the Great Scottish Run like? I'd been toying with doing it, then got an e-mail at work saying there are free places for it so have put my name forward for it.

My main concern is getting to and from the race from Paisley!

I like it.  Good atmosphere, well organised and a reasonably quick course.

I've got the train in and out the past couple of times I've done it and that works out alright. Could probably do the same from Paisley I would have thought.

Cracking finish in LaCourse by Le Tour, with van Vleuten catching van der Breggen on the line after one-v-one chase over after they summited the last hill about 10km (?) from the finish about 10 seconds apart.

I think you might have mistaken last years highlights for this years race.  La Course is on later today.

It was a great race though.

    Morning,

Just wondering if anybody has ever used Zwift (or similar) before?

I just have a bog standard Carrera Road Bike, so assuming that would fit something like this Turbo Trainer  ?

Should be fine.  I used to have one of those turbos.  You'll get a bit of tyre slippage if your going up a big gradient in an easy gear but its a fairly solid unit for the price and works well with zwift.  You might want to get a cadence sensor if you're bothered about that metric being accurate.

  11. It's setup for a intriguing finish in the last couple of stages.

You'd think Nibali needs to take a bit of time from Roglic to get a bit of a buffer for the final TT.   Roglic looked to have a bit of form to have a bit of a go toward the end of today's stage, despite being exposed for large parts of the race.  Carapaz is in the box seat but hasn't really been tested with his teammate Landa looking like he's the one one that still has the legs going into the last mountain stage.

It could yet all be blown apart tomorrow.

Nice work Stella! Sounds like a nice run.

I was at Pollok today. Managed to smash my Pollok PB which was pleasing. There were signs up asking for volunteers to help with a new Parkrun ... there was someone's email address to contact to see if anyone wanted to help but I didn't have my phone / pen etc. Does anyone know where this new parkrun is scheduled to be?

Seen a post on facebook about looking at southside locations.  I assume to relieve a bit of the pressure on Pollok.  Don't know if any decisions have been made.

There's been suggestion recently that they might be adding one at Helenburgh too.

  13. Filip Sebo has become a triathlete. He's unlikely to be worrying any of the pros, but he's qualified and race at the Xterra world championship and a WTS event in the 30-34 age group. So he must be pretty quick.
