I remember all of these very well - which is unfortunate in the case of the Spartans game  I also remember McDonald mainly due to his ponytail at the time and remember him getting a rousing reception upon being subbed late on in the 4-2 game against Clydebank in which he got his hatrick.

The Kevin Webster winner I remember vividly - cut inside his full back right infront of the away fans in the stand at Ochilview and then celebrated by running past the away support to the home end. After the game I'm fairly sure he said he didn't realise where the away fans were...... surely all of us celebrating in one half of the stand and the Stenny fans head in hands in the other should've given that away

I'm not surprised you haven't mentioned the Stranraer away play off promotion game from May 2008 considering my memories of that have you in a slightly worse for wear state after the bus journey down :P

Hope Sheffield is treating you well - I advise you to get up the road to Gayfield for a game this year ;)

The Stranraer and Cowdenbeath games in the play offs were the last games of watching Arbroath before moving down south. Happy memories to leave with both of which a lot of alcohol was involved as you say.

One game that I could not remember however with the knowledge you have you will definitely remember. It was either Jim Mercer or John McGlashan scoring from near the halfway line at Gayfield. At the time it was the best goal I’d ever seen so hoping you’ll know the game it’s from.

As for coming back up for a match. Think I’ve been up for 3 since leaving in 2008 and don’t think we’ve won one so probably best staying away. Although it would be brilliant to get the ‘gang’ back for 1 match and do hospitality package.

Good news! We now have an online archive containing our entire history! The archive is now fully live and can be found here; Arbroath Archive. Below gives a rough idea of what we've got on there:

    ·  A record of every game we've played from 1878 until present day, with over 6400 total games in total, with game date (teams, subs, scorers, ref etc) where known, and highlights for modern day games

    ·  A match report for every almost every game with thousands of old reports from the Arbroath Herald & Arbroath Guide and dozens of other sources, as well as fan reports from the old arbroathfc.org.uk website for our games in the 90s and early 00s

    ·  A profile for every player who has played for the club containing their full playing record for the club as well as player info, a picture where we have it and a biography

    ·  Our all-time player appearance records, goalscorer records and clean sheet records

    ·  Hundreds of pictures, programme covers, a managerial timeline, hat trick heroes and lots more!

As well as the site itself, we will be looking to keep our social media pages fairly active with regular posts on a whole host of things, such as 'Guess the Player', 'On This Day', 'Did You Know?' etc. as well as hopefully further articles/ interviews in the future.

We have a fantastic history as a football club, and I'm delighted we have our full records online for all to see and hope the social media channels will help bring some wonderful stories of players, matches etc. to you all over the coming months/ years. If anyone wants to get involved or has any material they think we should have on the site it'd be great to hear from them.

It'd be great if people we're able to share the site/ social media posts on their own online profiles to get things out there. Any and all questions/ contributions/ ideas etc. are welcomed and very much encouraged :)

    Absolutely fantastic stuff Simon.

Few things that brought memories back was my first every away game in the Scottish Cup vs Montrose and we played 2 suspended players won the game 1-0 but had to replay game which ended 0-0 then lost replay at home

Colin McDonald scoring a hat trick on his debut on loan halfway into the season. Always remember him because I’m pretty sure he had a ponytail.

    4-1 defeat to Spartans

7-2 win over East Stirling where 2 players got themselves hat tricks.

3-1 defeat away to Inverness in 2007 in the Scottish league cup on a Tuesday night. With only being 15 at the time I was the only one from my friends who got permission to go to the match with it being a school night. Pretty sure there was no supporter bus either so had to bag a lift from someone. Home early hours of the morning and in school for 9.

And a random 2-1 win away to Stenhousemuir where Kevin Webster scored in the last minute. Previous week myself and a few mates was like who’s the ‘old’ guy because he didn’t have much hair. Soon shut us up as the away fans went nuts I seem to remember.

Aye, he seems to have been involved in every game since we were linked with him, so couldn't see him leaving - what's the story with the injury?

From what I seen when it happened he turned and just pulled up after starting to run but not seen replay of it.  He was out clubbing in Sheffield on Saturday night and was seen by a few fans so hopefully nothing major and just out for a couple of weeks

Still waiting for the results of Obituary-Assisted-Refereeing, but my super-sub Constantine II of Greece has apparently come off the bench and immediately scored..

EDIT: The fourth official indicates that the goal should stand: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/constantine-death-greece-king-charles-philip-b2259719.html

EDIT 2: We're just ten days into 2023, and some psychopath already has predicted the only three hits of 2023 so far. At this rate, he'll have maxed out his team by March.

Only checked up on his health about an hour ago and saw a tweet saying he was recovering rapidly. Not complaining points please for my super sub.

  5. Was rather hoping to keep Calum Paterson until the end of the season and still hoping he does stay for the promotion push . Recently he’s been playing well and he’ll be one of those players that the fans will eventually realise when he’s gone that actually he was a useful player for us and his work rate will be missed.

Any idea what role he’ll play if he does come back up North?

Couldn't care less if its a woman or a man presenting the problem is that the presenter is pish regardless of gender.

Alex Scott I think is brilliant although the rest are pish. Karen Carney is horrific and should be nowhere near anything to do with the mens game.

  7. Switched over to BT sport to watch the build up of match to find 1 women presenting and 2 women on the panel talking about the womens football. Don’t mind a women presenter as I like Kelly Cates but already wishing they bring back Jake Humphries. But get these women panellist in the bloody bin please. Hope there is no women co commenting otherwise tv will get muted.

Also had to laugh at this.

  8. A player that Lee Bullen could be interested in is 19 year old Corey Glaves a CB who can also play as a defensive midfielder. A huge gamble but they both got on with eachother at Sheffield Wednesday youth academy. Was released in June and was linked with Brentford, Hull City and Chelsea however picked up an injury while training with Chelsea which unfortunately stopped the move but he did impress the club.

He wouldn't need to try that in a Celtic game...

I actually missed the finish as some one was down, I think, and I clicked out og the match, but I thought to myself there had been two water breaks + substititions there will be about 4/5 minutes additional, came back in and intially was confused as to what was happening.

Hope the next game has more bizarre incidents!

45  minute delay in the kick off, anybody know why?

Game is being played at the same stadium so the 2 nations wouldn’t of had a proper warm up as Mali didn’t leave the pitch until roughly 15:30.

Robert Durst at 78, points please and a Deadly Duo I think

    https://amp.theguardian.com/us-news/2022/jan/10/robert-durst-convicted-murderer-disgraced-heir-dies-78

Normally say condolences but not for this old effer

Surprised wasn’t picked by more considering he looked like he was banging on deaths door while on trial last year.

Anyways cheers for my points now off you pop to hell.

A small concern on the Bullen appointment is that he is leaving his wife and young kids behind in Sheffield. The upside being he’ll to totally focused on the job in hand up here but on the other hand he may miss them and eventually want to move back south?

It could be the case of Bullen settling down in Edinburgh possibly where I’m sure that’s where he goes during the summer time and his wife and the twins come up on the Friday and back down to Sheffield on the Sunday. When you’ve spent 2 decades in one city it’s not easy just to move the whole family somewhere especially when his Mrs has a successful business and the twins will be settled in school with friends and during term time also.

Well, they would be with their mentor and we did manage to get similar standard (if not better) from Ipswich recently.

Not sure I get your point? League 2 in England is a similar level to the Scottish Championship. We now have a connection with Wednesday so they may be willing to give us players who would normally be out our range.

I meant if there was interest in these two players in England ie League 2 side then I would be surprised if the club let them go up to Scotland rather than say a Salford City or a Bradford even if Bullen is new Ayr manager. On the other hand if it was Alex Bonnington who’s another striker at our U23’s then a move to Ayr would be excellent for him to gain first team experience and being in a match day squad every week and working under Lee Bullen would do absolute wonders for the kid. Even though all 3 play for the U23’s they are at different stages of their career and I would feel that Korede Adedoyin especially would benefit more playing in England rather than Scotland.
