Thats a fair point. In this modern world there's an assumption everyone has a smartphone but thats not true. My dad doesnt and isnt interested in having one. He doesnt go to Scotland games either but if he did whats he to do?

Is there actually a solution for such people? If they are going with someone else they can have their ticket on someone else's phone. Otherwise?

Yes, you can transfer your ticket to someone else. So for example you could have yours and your dad's ticket on your app when logged in. I guess you'd scan it and send him through the turnstile, then scan your own and go through.

It would require your dad to have an account for the app though, so again in this example you'd need to log in on your phone with his account details, transfer the ticket to yourself, then log back in on your own account where you'd then have both tickets.

Initially SSC members were not going to be allowed to transfer tickets to protect against points harvesting, but they listened to concerns such as this example, and let members transfer one ticket. Non-members can transfer tickets freely I think.

As far as using the app for entry it all went fine for me, no queue and scanning and entry worked smoothly.

  2. If Anderson is out, then I think Doak could be in as the "one for the future" spot in the squad. I think this squad was a bit bigger than previous ones (?) so depends if Clarke keeps it at the same size or not. Suspect he might cos one of the matches is a friendly (although he didn't rotate at all for the England match)

  3. From the Ewan Murray in the Guardian

    Quote

Clarke apparently has no interest in pursuing Elliot Anderson and Harvey Barnes any further. Scotland’s manager has made his case to the Newcastle duo, who must decide whether to declare for Scotland or England.

Seems fair enough. Won't keep bugging them about it but they could be called up if they are committed. Not sure how it works in practice. If he wants them in the next squad he gives them a call in advance to check they'll show up?

Slightly off topic but I’ve been looking for an excuse to post this and it will maybe put folk in the mood for tomorrow.

Now at the number of re-watches of this that I'm picking up little details every time.  My favourite is that McLean does an excited wee skip just before Dykes lays it back to him when he realises he's about to win it.

I've just started drinking Whisky (I'm almost 50) and wasn't sure where to start. I'm a big fan of drambuie so I picked up Monkey shoulder as it said on the label it was spicy and it's really nice with a drop of ginger ale or on its own. Just looking for pointers where to go from here. Obviously monkey shoulder is a blended whisky and was looking for a similar but not too expensive malt to try.

    Thanks in advance.

Blends could be a good entry point. Douglas Laing and Compass Box both do a range of blends. Compass Box tell you what is in each one on their website, so if you find one you like you can try a bottle from one of the distilleries that make it up. Douglas Laing do their blends by region which might give you a pointer too.

For single malt as a starting point, in addition to what has been suggested already, Aberlour 12, Ardbeg Wee Beastie, Bruichladdich Classic Laddie can be found around £40 in big supermarkets. I'd also recommend Glencadam 10, which is generally £40 and a great value dram. Need to visit a dedicated whisky shop or website though.

I'm buying a gift for somebody who did me a favour, he like a Speyside. I want to spend around £50 and am thinking of either Glenallachie 12 or Mannochmore 12, I've never tasted these. Anyone have any thoughts/suggestions?

Can't go wrong with the Glenallachie

  7. I've been to the last few whisky fringe events. I think my first one was 2016. I really enjoy them, a good chance to try a whole range of whiskies and it's definitely guided what I buy (and what I don't buy). It's also a big social occasion now for my whisky pals and it's a day out we all try and get together for.

Most tables give you a bit of chat, which I appreciate, and the chance to sample some whiskies that I either can't afford or I'm not sure whether are worth a punt. Longrow, James Eadie and Ardbeg Dark Cove are all whiskies that I've tried for the first time and gone on to buy. On the other hand, there have been bottlings from Dalmore and Arran that I thought I would like and decided against buying after sampling.

The ticket price includes £10 off a bottle, either that you buy on the day or valid for the next month at Royal Mile Whiskies. However, I'm pretty sure the price the first year I went was £30, and it's now 50% more expensive for my fifth visit.

Got tickets for the Friday this year.

  8. Hendry's goal was very similar to Souttar's against Denmark but there must be a lot more going on in the penalty area that allows one of our main set piece threats alone at the back post to set up the goal. The goal analysis never goes into too much detail but it'd be interesting to see what blocking or dummy runs are being made to stop the opposition picking up Cooper/Hanley.

Crazy Springbank time again. Anyone had any luck? Got a Campbeltown Loch in the post, looking forward to it.

Queues outside Good Spirit Company this morning. First person was there about 0430 apparently.

I tried the Longrow Red last year in a Springbank tasting pack but had no luck getting my hands on a bottle so far. Picked up a Campbeltown Loch which I'm looking forward to trying.

  10. Two player board games are a bit tricky, while most of them work as two players they work best with three or four (like King of Tokyo).

Ticket to Ride is a good shout. Carcassone is extremely popular and works well with two, once you get the hang of it it's very simple to lift out the box and get started straight away. Isle of Skye is similar but a bit more complicated. Pandemic is a bit different cos you work together to try and win, probably a bit better with more people.

Recent Christmas additions included Dragonwood, which took a bit of explaining the first time but is much more straightforward once you've played it a couple of time.

Games that don't require a board like Yatzee or OK Play are good too, especially for getting started straight away.

I have a bunch more I've been acquiring pretty much since March 2020 if this turns into a general discussion and recommendations thread.

Is anyone on here a member of the Scotch Malt Whisky Society? Considering getting a mate of mine a membership as a wedding present (I am best man). Worth it for 55 quid?

Yes, I'm a member. I'd say it depends on how much whisky they buy and where they are based. The two main benefits are entry to the members rooms and being allowed to buy SMWS bottles.

I got my membership for Christmas 2019, so have not actually been able to visit any of the members rooms due to lockdown. Previously I went fairly regularly on other people's memberships and the Leith vaults is near my workplace so in normal times I'd have been popping in enough to justify the membership.

There's also the chance to pick up some interesting bottles, although in the last year it's been a bit of a shambles with the online shop and stuff generally sells out in 60 seconds.

If they are likely to buy a few bottles a year and/or would regularly visit the members rooms in Edinburgh or Glasgow then I'd say it's worth it.

  12. I've read a couple of previews of tonight's match indicating Gilmour would get some game time but that Mctominay won't be there in time for it. Potentially this elevates Gilmour or Turnbull to starting or they rush Mctominay in.

I think the real downside is both RBs being out, shame Patterson won't get a run out. Apart from that I think we can still field a team that isn't far away from a starting XI and lets us look at a couple of the alternative options for CB and CM. Chance for Cooper or McKenna to claim the remaining CB position and for Turnbull and Gilmour to stake a claim.

  13. 15 minutes ago, The Moonster said:

I think our centre back options are fine. Hanley gets a bad rap and Cooper/Tierney/Gallagher have all been solid there for us.

As for the midfield, if you're Steve Clarke watching your usual trusted guys like Christie and McGregor absolutely stink the place out for much of the season, it probably makes you think twice about using both of them in midfield, especially when Turnbull has been head and shoulders above the two of them. With Gilmour coming in there as well and Jack being out, I can understand why we might be looking at a different balance in there.

My first thought was it would be working out how to offer more protection to the centre backs when we're defending and taking the ball from them to start moves when we have possession, which is the role Jack was filling by himself before. Possibly two deeper midfielders.

Is that not too peaty though? Tired laphroig and it can get in the sea.

That's a good question actually. Probably trophy cabinet describes it well but with the possibility of drinking. Might do both. It is a BIG birthday after all. Thanks

I assume the first picks are in line with Deanston & Highland Park?

there's a shop near me with lots of Arran Whisky in it. I'll go have a look. Thanks

Probably closer to saving to drink with pals. Budget probably 100-150.

Thanks. It's a few days away yet. After tasting Laphroig Ive shyed away from Isaly or peaty stuff. Am I wrong in doing that? Live in Italy so your tempting suggestion of a visit to the SMWS isn't an option unfortunately. The Milan online Whisky shop are doing some online tastings though. Do you think this looks good value based on the samples?

    https://whiskyshop.it/it/eventi-degustazioni/2501/degustazione-on-line-octomore

    Glendronach 18 or 21

    Bunnahabhain 18

    Glenfarclas 21 or 25

I'd say they are all impressive enough for the cabinet and nothing extreme to the taste.

Do people use any of these taster subscriptions? Fees like it could be a good way to branch out and discover more?

I recently ordered 5 samples from master of malt, just before making the leap to buying full bottles, but have been considering a monthly sub as a treat to myself.

I've not done subscriptions but I've searched out a fair few taster packs in the last year of lockdown. Bought a few bottles on the back of them, but also probably saved myself a few quid by realising I didn't actually fancy a full bottle of some of them. I enjoy it, we do a zoom call with a few of us sampling the same pack and discuss the individual drams.

Right, I know you big lads like a challenge. I have a big birthday coming up and would like a quality bottle to celebrate. Still a relative novice so would like some pointers.

I do enjoy bourbons but in the Scotch world, I have really enjoyed Highland Park 12 and Deanston 12. I have a Deanston 18 sitting in storage for when the postage rules ease up and have been looking at Highland Park offerings but there are loads of them. I'm not stuck on these two distilleries but that's the depth of my experience so I am open to suggestions.

Over to you fellas. Thanks in advance.

As GiGi said, the real question is what are you wanting it for?

Opening immediately and sharing with people? Saving for when your close pals want a special dram? Sticking on the shelf and never opening?

    And what's the budget?

    Fairly new to whisky here.

Recently enjoyed a laphroig and a talisker 10...enjoyed the latter more.

Any recommendations from the esteemed group?

    Budget is probably £30 tops

Sadly the price hikes in whisky in the last couple of years mean that £30 is probably the minimum you'll pay for a single malt these days, with a couple of exceptions.

Ardmore legacy is one of those bottles constantly on offer in Tesco etc so keep an eye out for that when it's available around £20.

Laphroaig Select or Quarter Cask can also be found for around £25-30 when on offer in supermarkets. One I'd recommend that's just over your budget at the moment is Kilkerran 12, normally around £35-40, but based on your preferences above it seems like a good fit. Glen Scotia Double cask is also in that price range. There's also Glen Scotia Campbeltown Harbour which has been on the go for £25 when it was first released, might be on offer somewhere.

There's plenty of Islay ones I could suggest but you wouldn't normally see them under £40. However, it's also coming up for Black Friday and Christmas shopping time which generally sees a lot of offers so definitely worth looking out for some deals in the next couple of weeks.

  18. As far as I understand it, if SMWS know that you're flipping then it's a lifetime ban. However, obviously you can get another account with a different email address etc and people can have multiple accounts.

SMWS has really blown up in the last couple of years. Around the start of the 2010s you could get any bottle you wanted without a rush but now they're all gone two minutes after going on sale. If you live in Edinburgh, or now Glasgow, then there's the advantage of going to the members rooms so it's not just about being able to buy bottles. The vaults in Leith is a great wee bar, although I have been paying £5 a month this year for the privilege of getting in and haven't been once. Normally I'd pop in a few times though.

SMWS tastings have been a decent zoom whisky chat during lockdown although the quality of the drams is a bit hit or miss that can all add to the experience.

Plenty of other indie bottlers out there though.

On another note, me and my pals have started a couple of social media whisky accounts, basically taking all our whisky chat from whatsapp and sticking it online. If anyone is interested

We are officially in to rebrand season. Glengoyne announced this week, it looks meh. Hopefully they dont f**k with the expressions, the 12yo in particular is ridiculously good value.

Glenturret are releasing a new core range tomorrow, looks interesting. Again a rebrand but I think there are some new releases for their core range which might be interesting.

I see BenRiach and Benromach have helpfully chosen similar fonts in their rebrandings.

Tried a Dutch whisky a couple of weeks ago which I was pleasantly surprised with, Millstone Peated PX Finish. Was in a bar in Rotterdam called Café De Ouwehoer (literally translated as The Old Whorehouse). Good menu and plenty of malts (like Ardbeg 10yo) starting at EUR 3.50 which was an even better surprise! A Grouse was EUR 4.00 though...

On another topic, are smaller bottles of malts a "thing" (talking 100ml to 250ish ml)? I'd like to get a mix of types but not wanting to shell out on normal sized bottles at the moment. I've had a look but doesn't seem to be much of a market.

Cadenheads do some 200 ml bottles for around £20-£30. They change all the time but a decent opportunity to try something different. Need to visit the shop though, either Royal Mile or Campbeltown.

Alternatively, find 6 like minded souls and split the cost of a bottle between you and decant into 100ml bottles

That looks an interesting website, I'm going to try to find some time to have a good look at it.  I have a few of my own wee blends on the go just now and I think that'll give me some more encouragement to carry on mixing up my own flavours.

You do it with food so why not whisky? (Because you don't want to waste good whisky making rubbish homeblends)

You might be interested in this one. Found it when looking for special offers.

    Duly purchased.

I have heard good things about it but thought I'd missed my chance to buy it as it's a special edition and was always out of stock when I looked. 30% Clynelish apparently, sounds like my kind of blend.

Compass box originally got a lot of stick from the Scotch Whisky Association ( the SWA - the distillers trade association) for being too transparent in what they were doing , they appear to have backed off a bit now (the SWA) but it seems a strange old world where telling people what they are getting is deemed negative

The Compass Box website gives you a detailed breakdown of what is in each blend. I got the Great King Street for a Christmas present and really liked it, https://www.compassboxwhisky.com/whiskies/index.php?id=5#prettyPhoto Turns out it has Clynelish and Linkwood in it, two of my favourites.

Picked up the Glasgow Blend last week, it starts off similar but they added Laphroaig to give it some smoke.

The transparency of what is in each blend is great, encourages me to buy something rather than puts me off.
