I was looking into air train as very cheap compared to other ways. Good to know it is straight forward enough. I'm not sure which airport I will be at to start due to the flight being book by the company I'm working with.

im staying at Hudson hotel at Central park so trying to make plans before going.

    plans so far

visit Central Park, Empire State building, Times Square etc

    attend Knicks vs Dallas Mavs.

    christmas shopping

only have two and a half days so will be filled.

The Air Train takes you to a subway stop, then you get the subway the rest of the way in. Air Train costs $5 then it's $2.50 for the subway.

Worth looking at a map and seeing what you can do in the one area. For instance, if you're starting at Central Park you could walk down to Grand Central, then on to the ESB back up 5th Avenue for shopping and stop off at the Rockefeller which has the big Christmas tree. MSG is on 34th street, same as ESB. If you're coming out at the end of the basketball, walk up Broadway and through Times Square at night. it's so easy to navigate using the street grid system.

I'd think about what building you want to go up. I think ESB is the most expensive but the viewing platform isn't that great. Everyone told me to do the Rockefeller instead. Ended up doing the One World Observatory, I think it's about the same price as the Rockefeller.

  2. Just got back from NYC last week. Loved every minute of it. There's so much to see and do, I advise anyone to have a plan before they go.

Airtrain and subway from JFK was really simple.

You do a lot of walking as the subway is good for going North to South in Manhattan but isn't really like London where you can go skip across town that easily.

As well as all the obvious first time visit things (Central Park, Grand Central, Broadway, 5th Avenue, Staten Island Ferry, Brooklyn Bridge etc) I would total recommend getting the cable car across to Roosevelt Island. You go from the hectic streets of Manhattan to a chilled out wee park over the river. There's good views from the cable car and from Roosevelt Island. I also went up the new One World Observatory, hadn't planned on it but there was no queue when we went past so nipped in. Great views of the city, it is extremely high up. Didn't bother going up Empire State or Rockefeller.

The High Line was also a cool walk to do in the evening.

One thing I noticed was we had to have a plan for where to eat in the evening. I had thought we could just wander about and come across a few places but it was never that easy. I think a lot of restaurants are part of hotels but you don't really see them as well if you're walking past. Could be we were just looking in the wrong places. Grabbing a bagel for breakfast and pizza slice for lunch was great though.

  3. Heading to New York for 4 nights mid-September, partly as a 30th birthday celebration for my wife. I've been trawling this thread and other places for advice and think I've compiled a decent list of things to do. Time Square, Top of the Rock, Central Park, couple of museums, Grand Central, One World Trade, Brooklyn Bridge, Broadway, etc.

Question is, what is something a bit different/special anyone could recommend? I was thinking maybe a night time boat cruise with bottle of champagne.

Also think I'll be arranging for a car to do a transfer from airport to hotel. Anyone able to recommend a decent company?

  4. I may have missed this, but whats the best podcasts to listen to?

Storm of Spoilers is good, although as the name suggests they do a lot of talking about what might happen in future episodes. Now the show is mostly past the books this is more guesswork than anything concrete.

A cast of kings is also pretty good and just discusses the most recently aired episode.

  5. I think he is. He is clearly one of the most important characters in the entire show and it can't be because he is funny and likes a bevvy.

    It'd be a nice counterpoint to R+L=J.

Tywin lies about Tyrion being his child to protect the family reputation.

Ned lies about Jon being his out of loyalty to his sister at the risk of his own reputation and marriage.

  6. Book spoiler;

Aegon is mentioned in the books and is Dany's nephew (Rhaegar's son with Ellia Martell), although they're around the same age. The 'plan' is that he meets Dany (who doesn't know he's still alive) and they marry, so the Targaryen dynasty can continue and he's going to be one head of the dragon. TV show has cut this out entirely though, unfortunately, as I liked that storyline. His legitimacy is disputed in a lot of places, and I doubt he will appear now as his story does go quite left field over the course of the books.

It's also the guy who's in charge of him that gets the greyscale instead of Jorah. Given he's been dropped from the show I think it'll turn out he's not really who he claims to be, just some other boy being used as a pawn similar to Jeyne Poole being a fake Arya for Ramsay's needs.

The scene with Tyrion and the Dragons this week has convinced me he is a secret Targaryean.

  7. Yes, that's because he was in it so he had to be in the credits. But there's a difference between being in the closing credits and being the very first name in the opening sequence.

I thought he was in the opening sequence. I also thought Peter Dinklage was first in Monday's opening sequence cos they do a mix of status and alphabetical order but I can't be bothered going back to check cos I'm not arguing against Kit Harington playing a big part this season.

  8. Charles Dance was in the credits for the opening episode of Season 5 and he was just laying on a slab for a couple of minutes.

I still think Jon will be back walking about before long.

  9.

Congrats. What did you call him?!

Seriously cannot find a boy's name we both like. The girl's name has been picked for years but just can't choose a boy's. "Choose" is probably a misleading word as that would suggest we have a list! We have zilch. The only name I really like is the name of my cousin's boy :( What's worse is that I find out the sex on May 11th as I'm hoping for a wee girl. The missus doesn't want to find out though so she needs to have a boy's name picked by then or she'll be able to tell by my lack of enthusiasm for picking a boy's name thereafter, that it's a girl

You think you can keep it a secret until the birth? I'm sure I'd say something unintentionally, referring to the bump as he/she or something like that.

I found boys names harder. First child we picked one quite early and stuck with it all the way through. Complicated labour ended up in theatre so when he was born they took him next door to do a couple of checks and I went with him. They asked me the name and obviously my wife wasn't there to confirm that he looks like a Calvin but I went with it and straight away all the doctors and nurses are calling him Calvin in every sentence so there was no going back. Not that my wife had changed her mind or anything but was still quite a pressure situation.

Second child we had one girls name set in stone and three boys options. Much easier delivery so we were able to both decide on Felix when he was there. Although I'm sure my wife had already decided and was just humouring me with the other couple of choices. She was right though, it was definitely the right choice.

  10. The advert for AO.

The wifie declares a disaster as she has to bake a cake for her daughters school and the fridge has broken.

How the f**k is this a disaster? just eggs and flour surely.

Then the fridge arrives and the stupid bint fills it with salad, what about the cake you fucking airhead?

At least if they had her replacing a broken oven then they story would make sense.

  11. I reckon either Roose and co win the battle and Stannis dies, or he wins but gets killed by fucking Brienne of Tarth.

Sounds like quite the sex scene.

  12. Yeah, the league goes on through the internationals. The main leagues all do it through the 6 Nations as well. I don't know why but the system of having the top 4 compete by playoff kind of evens it out as you don't have to finish top to win. Not that I agree with either part of that set up.

  13. Could any of you lads do me a favour by tweeting this - 'Found. #VMShortsVote'.

found. is a short film which uses a song I've written/recorded, and it is up for the Virgin Media Shorts award. Would be doss if any of you could help out. Cheers.

    Link to the film?

I've seen a few requests for votes on my feed. Not liked a film enough to vote for one yet.

  14. Another book spoiler, folks.

Nope, they still have so much preparation to do before they can even think of having that wedding. The Martells need to be introduced, and I'm surprised that they haven't been done already as Myrcella left for Dorne quite some time ago. They need to focus more on the Iron Born characters as well. There are also some small matters that need to take place at the Wall. I think it's very likely that the next wedding will take place in Season 4 Episode 9, although some characters involved are in the correct place so I can see some characters not seeing much action or movement. Surely people will also get suspicious that Baelish still hasn't arrived in the Vale yet either.

I thought that episode was good, it did pretty much everything it needed to do to set up next seasons main characters and the upcoming events. We're going to see even more character changes too. Jaime, Theon and Arya are the obvious ones, as they've already started their progression, but we'll see even more interesting interactions and intrigue. What do people think will happen next season? What do you all hope to happen? It could be interesting discussion to tide us over, but obviously book spoilers should be marked as such. I'm just interested in how people see things from the perspective of the tv audience.

As a side point, there seems to be far less emotion about what the Freys did to Robb Stark's body than I thought their would be.

    Book spoilers.

I think the wedding will need to be ep 3 or 4. You still have Tyrion's trial and subsequent escape and showdown with Tywin to fit in. The Twyin meeting could be ep 9.

For Jon, I don't know if he'll have the defence of the castle from the South against the wildling raiders. It seemed to be only Tormund and Ygritte left. And they've taken away the surprise in Stannis showing up.

  15. I've started following Limmy, but I believe I'm going to have to stop soon.

All he does is post pictures of himself, trying to make funny faces. He's either very lonely or totally attention seeking.

I think he's pretty funny but can def see why people would get bored of him.

My twitter name is in my sig. I'm thinking of live tweeting Linlithgow marches on Tuesday, it's going to be very entertaining.
