    I see that Hearts B trounced Gretna 2008 7-0 in tonight's opener!

Yes. I was there.  It was a pretty impressive display despite the opposition not being the strongest.  Hearts still fielded a young side with three 16 year olds playing most of the game.  They have another four players from last season who are still eligible, three of whom are injured and one is with the first team.

I'd estimate there being around 350 there.

Gretna's David Cox lost the head at one point triggering a mass brawl, which ended up with the ref showing four yellow cards.

Hearts only charged £5 for adults last year at Rosewell, not that it really helped crowds by the looks of things. Not sure about the uglies B teams last season.

It was £5/£2 last season and Hearts are keeping the same pricing for this season at Ainslie Park (free for the first game of the season).  Their prices were the lowest in the league, although Caledonian Braves implemented a pay what you can scheme in September last year due to the cost of living crisis.

For a pre season kick about that was pretty lively last night. I don't think we have ever won a game when Scott Lambie was ref. Enough said. There can't have been many penalty shoot outs where a keeper saves three and the other keeper none and still finishes on the losing side. Saturday was good and this was better, all very encouraging.

It happened in last season's penalty shootout in the EOS Cup Final between Linlithgow Rose and Gala Fairydean Rovers.  The Lithgae keeper saved three, but watched his team mates hit four penalties over the bar as GFR won 4-3 on pens.

  4. Here is an illustration of the pitch slope problem for Bonnyrigg if they are to obtain a Bronze licence.  (subject to the accuracy of the map).

The licensing rules place a limit of 1:40 on the slope of a pitch for a Bronze licence.  The width of New Dundas Park is circa 60m. That would allow for a 1.5m drop over the width.  The illustration above suggests a 2.6m drop at the Dundas Street end of the ground and 2.5m at the other end.  I'm sure that it is possible to level it or at least reduce the slope, but it won't be cheap.

  5. According to Iain McMenemy, the grace period being given to existing SPFL member clubs is one year.

All voted in favour to move up to bronze over the next season by the latest.

I guess the more pertinent question is whether promotion candidates would be afforded the same grace period if they asked for a waiver.

I think Beith would have done well also.  The West clubs are behind the East as the WOSFL is a new association and everyone in the West for past couple years have been catching up but now they have a good selection of teams who have their SFA license so expect more to follow or look into the potential of gaining their license and then hopefully earn promotion to the Lowland or beyond.

Think Beith would have done well in Playoff and definitely good enough to win it but they don’t have a license so hopefully they will have a license soon

The WOS clearly has stronger teams than the EOS at the moment, given that the EOS has lost Kelty, Bonnyrigg, Bo'ness, Tranent and Linlithgow to the LL in recent years.  However, take the equivalent top 5 out the WOS (Beith, Auchinleck, Darvel, Clydebank and Pollok) and the gap doesn't look so big.

  7. The PWG met twice, on 7th March and 25th April, at which the topic of accommodating B Teams was discussed.  Those discussions led to the creation of the SFA's ill-fated Resolution 6 to be voted on at the SFA's AGM.

Representatives from all the leagues were present at the first meeting, while the SPFL reps were absent for the second meeting.

?? Is that correct. It would make Craigroyston into Edinburgh City "B". Stand back!

There's been similar issues with Broomhill/BSC, Rossvale/Caledonian Locos, Caledonian Braves/Edusport and even Syngenta where the "senior" club has broken away from its boys club roots,

Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath are involved in League cup games on 22 July, you would have to think they will ensure those teams are matched up for week 1, so they will catch up that fixture another time.

Rovers are also in League Cup action on 29 July, although Cowden aren’t, they finish their group fixtures in the midweek between the first and second LL weekends.

Hearts B and Gretna don't have fixtures on 22 July, so were probably scheduled to play Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath, or vice versa.

Only Albion Rovers and Cowdenbeath are missing from the second round of fixtures, so that looks like it would have been scheduled for the midweek game.

Edinburgh University and Albion Rovers are missing from the third round of fixtures on 29 July.

  12. Toys out the pram job, or do they have an alternative plan after discussions with the SFA and others?

The statement makes it clear that the Conference League was only a stepping stone to what they wanted.

I wouldn't put it past the SPFL to seek to introduce a 5th tier within the SPFL with an implicit threat to any dissenters that the top teams will break away as the SPL did in 1998.  The new "SPFL" company with Doncaster and Beattie as directors was incorporated for a purpose.

  13. Updated Prize fund

The total prize money to be shared with clubs for the upcoming Viaplay Cup will amount to £2,361,000 – a rise of more than £200,000 from last season’s figure of £2,157,000.

The full schedule of prize monies is set out below:

    • 1st round group stage - 5th position: £24,000
    • 1st round group stage - 4th position: £25,500
    • 1st round group stage - 3rd position: £27,500
    • 1st round group stage - 5 worst runners-up: £32,000
    • 2nd round losers - £55,000
    • Quarter-final losers - £87,500
    • Semi-final losers - £120,000
    • Runners-up - £175,000
    • Winners - £380,000

In addition, each club playing in a live televised Viaplay Cup tie (home or away) will receive a facility fee payment of:

£17,000 (group stage); and £27,000 (second round, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final).

It didn’t then say and this is the methodology that will be used in succeeding years nor was it put into the rules.  So maybe the idea was we will do this for a couple of years and once HL and LL runner up have had a shot each we can then do something something different. Is there now in your view a new precedent set that the last SPFL2 team relegated not automatically in the Cup will now be invited in 2024/25?  That may or may not be the case

I might as well ask you the same question as I asked an earlier poster.

There is invitation by meritocracy, or invitation by chumocracy. Now which do you think applied in this case?

The amount of folk fuming about is being invited is laughable, no other team would’ve declined an invite so don’t see why people think we should’ve

I don't think that many are critical of Cowdenbeath accepting the invitation, but there are many who are critical of the decision to offer an invitation to Cowdenbeath in the first place.

  16. This is what the SPFL stated prior to the draw in 2022.

With five SPFL clubs again taking part in UEFA competitions next season, the draw will involve the remaining 37 SPFL clubs from 2021/22 plus Highland League champions Fraserburgh and Lowland League champions Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic.

The additional slot will be taken by Highland League runners-up Buckie Thistle as the Lowland League were granted the extra place last season.

And this is what was said in 2021

With five SPFL clubs taking part in UEFA competitions next season, the Premier Sports Cup group stage draw will involve the other 37 SPFL clubs from 2020/21 plus Highland League champions Brora Rangers and Lowland League champions Kelty Hearts.

The new, additional slot in the group stage will be taken this year by East Kilbride, who finished as runners-up in the Lowland League this season. This follows the drawing of lots between East Kilbride and Fraserburgh, the Highland League runners-up.

So there was a precedent of tossing a coin between the HL and LL for their runners-up. No mention of clubs relegated in previous seasons being part of the drawing of lots.
